About this deal

When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.” If you learn better visually, then you can watch a video of me outlining the same theory on YouTube here. Perhaps this description makes clear that being empathic is a complex, demanding, and strong - yet subtle and gentle - way of being.” This is one of the most common misconceptions of the Actualising Tendency, and more specifically, the term self-actualisation. Awork of transcendent literature, one that suggests the universe still smiles upon us despite all indications to the contrary.” —The Wall Street Journal

On the other hand, having great ideas and writing a book are totally different blessings and it's evident here. This should be considered as a reflection of thoughts rather than a typical book. When I can relax, and be close to the transcendental core of me, then I may behave in strange and impulsive ways in the relationship, ways I cannot justify rationally, which have nothing to do with my thought processes. But these strange behaviors turn out to be right in some odd way. At these moments it seems that my inner spirit has reached out and touched the inner spirit of the other. Our relationship transcends itself and has become something larger.” Second, this is Rogers' telling therapists that real therapy requires bravery, on the part of the client, but also on the part of the therapist, as well. I hope I eventually get to a place where this is what I consistently do:In 2007, Rubin was called "the most important producer of the last 20 years" by MTV and was named on Time's list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World". The degree to which I can create relationships, which facilitate the growth of others as separate persons, is a measure of the growth I have achieved in myself.” In my early professional years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for his own personal growth?” So I have learned to ask myself, can I hear the sounds and sense the shape of this other person's inner world? Can I resonate to what he is saying so deeply that I sense the meanings he is afraid of, yet would like to communicate, as well as those he knows?” This means that we are always trying to grow and develop to the best of our ability, in whatever circumstances that we find ourselves in, taking into account, our self-concept (much more of this below). Potentially damaged but ever-present

But to others, particularly creatives in need of a spur – or anyone in proximity to a client, or loved one, approaching a deadline – The Creative Act has just the right level of confident loftiness to provide succour and useful ways of recontextualising problems.

The organism has one basic tendency and striving – to actualize, maintain, and enhance the experiencing organism Carl Rogers – Client-Centred Therapy (1951) p.487 The chapters on theory have a bit more content, but are limited to, for example, a chapter of short vignettes, which leaves the feeling that the ideas are better explained elsewhere. I also felt that these chapters were generously sprinkled with a feeling of ‘look how neatly my ideas worked’ and ‘if only everybody did this’ at the expense of actual content.

PACE: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy - GIRFEC PACE: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy - GIRFEC

An existential enquiry into the nature of creativity, art and being part of the human race . . . a deep look at the most fundamental of human impulses.” —Big Issue I believe it will have become evident why, for me, adjectives such as happy, contented, blissful, enjoyable, do not seem quite appropriate to any general description of this process I have called the good life, even though the person in this process would experience each one of these at the appropriate times. But adjectives which seem more generally fitting are adjectives such as enriching, exciting, rewarding, challenging, meaningful. This process of the good life is not, I am convinced, a life for the faint-fainthearted. It involves the stretching and growing of becoming more and more of one's potentialities. It involves the courage to be. It means launching oneself fully into the stream of life. Yet the deeply exciting thing about human beings is that when the individual is inwardly free, he chooses as the good life this process of becoming.” The sprouts were, in their bizarre, futile growth, a sort of desperate expression of the directional tendency I have been describing. They would never become plants, never mature, never fulfill their real potential. But under the most adverse circumstances, they were striving to become. Life would not give up, even if it could not flourish Carl Rogers – A Way of Being (1980) p.118 Noticing how you notice new things is the way you make sense of your world and make new distinctions. This is how you learn to change your Way of Being by observing how your language, and emotions. moods and physiology determine the actions you can take and the results you then get. Your learning becomes adaptive when you can see the story and the interpretations you are making that aren’t getting you the result you want, and see what changes you can make to your Way of Being to make a difference. In a VUCA World, you have to react to novelty and adapt within shorter time spans. This demands more of your sensemaking than your analytical skills. Going forward The Actualising Tendency was central to Rogers person-centred theory and as a result, his work with clients. He believed that the Actualising Tendency was a fundamental part of every single client that he saw and also the main reason why the person-centred approach is non-directive.Anyway, Carl Rogers is badass. I taught Introduction to Psychology this summer for the third time, and whenever we discuss his person-centered approach, I get bemused questions such as, "So he just...listened to his clients? Really listened to them? And it worked?" Well, yes. Essentially, Carl Rogers articulated the idea that what makes a therapist helpful is not how many degrees a therapist has, or how many fancy and completely non-parsimonious theories they espouse, but how well they connect to their clients, and if they can actually provide unconditional positive regard--the idea that a therapist doesn't have to like or condone things that clients do, but does have to accept them as worthwhile human beings, no matter their circumstances or actions. This is not just some warm and fuzzy idea; decades after Rogers first started writing, we now have a strong body of evidence that the type of therapy matters far, far less than how much you like and trust the person you're graciously allowing to help you. Your Way of Being impacts on how others react to you. It can affect how others see you. For example, you may come across as someone who is warm, engaging and sincere or as aloof, devious and selfish. Your “being” is revealed in the way you converse and cooperate. Do you turn up as someone who is enthusiastic and a creative thinker, willing to collaborate to make things happen? Working for deep, sustainable change

Yet, the directional tendency in them can be trusted. The clue to understanding their behavior is that they are striving, in the only ways that they perceive as available to them, to move toward growth, toward becoming. To healthy persons, the results may seem bizarre and futile, but they are life’s desperate attempt to become itself. This potent constructive tendency is an underlying basis of the person-centered approach. Carl Rogers – A Way of Being (1980) p.119 Whether we are speaking of a flower or an oak tree, of an earthworm or a beautiful bird, of an ape or a person, we will do well, I believe, to recognize that life is an active process, not a passive one. Whether the stimulus arises from within or without, whether the environment is favorable or unfavorable, the behaviors of an organism can be counted on to be in the direction of maintaining, enhancing, and reproducing itself. This is the very nature of the process we call life. This tendency is operative at all times. Indeed, only the presence or absence of this total directional process enables us to tell whether a given organism is alive or dead. It’s your Way of Being that helps or hinders what you can achieve with your life and your leadership skills. Understanding what produces a Way of Being and how to adapt it helps you perform better and become your best self. Both have a significant role to play in your personal and professional development. The focus here is on the interrelationship and coherence between language, emotions/mood and your physiology. LANGUAGE/CONVERSATION Judging by all the praise this book got, a lot of people would be really angry with my review, but I feel that this work is a classic case of a “naked king”. And I feel that the most appreciative audience for it would be either those who are only starting their creative journeys or those who are establishing themselves is gurus of creativity and are striving to be “meta”.It’s sensible to raise an eyebrow when Rubin, that most commercial of producers, claims to disregard commerce in the service of art. But his words can be seductive. I’m now off to replace my own scarcity mindset with one of abundance. I will strive to make the ecstatic my compass, and see how that goes.
