HOW TO TREAT VINE WEEVIL Application can be made via conventional sprayer with a lance, by boom or by sprinklers, selecting nozzles (aperture should be greater than 0.5 mm) to give a coarse spray, via Dosatron or via drip irrigation How should I apply Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer? Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is simple to apply, you just need a watering can and water. When applying to pots make sure that not too much water flows out of the drainage holes so the nematodes are not lost. Next, take 0.5 litres of nematode concentrate solution and add to an 8 litre watering can and fill with water ( or use our specific nematode applicator, the Nema Super Sprayer, for optimum nematode application). The nematodes kill the vine weevil larvae, which do the most damage to the plant by eating the roots. This also prevents new adult vine weevils from hatching. Vine weevil nematodes will stop vine weevil destroying the roots of your plants. These microscopic transparent worms (Heterorhabditis megidis) feed and multiply inside the larva. The nematodes seek out and kill vine weevil larvae.

Nematodes offer a compeletely natural, organic solution for getting rid of ants. Steinernema feltiae nematodes are natural predators of ants and ants will move their nest once predators move in. Nematodes therefore offer an easy solution to force ants to move their nests and get rid of the source.

This is a symptom that the vine weevil larvae are eating your roots, reducing the plant’s ability to take up water and nutrients. What can I do to control the adult vine weevil? Finding and destroying the adults is difficult, so it is better to use nematodes to kill the larvae and break the lifecycle. Research and testing identifies and isolates the most effective nematode species against a specific target pest. Within the UK, the supply and use of biocontrol products containing EPN is regulated under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Ornamental plants grown in containers can be treated with the systemic neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid (e.g. Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer) as a liquid drench applied to the compost. This insecticide gives protection against the grubs for up four months; treatment in mid- to late summer will control the young larvae and prevent damage occurring later in the autumn to spring period. This product cannot be used to treat edible plants or ornamental plants growing in the ground Vine weevils are common pests that feed on over 200 species of plant, including fuschia and rhododendron, as well as berry fruits, like strawberries and raspberries.

Vine-weevil grubs usually hatch after two weeks and immediately start to feed on the roots of their host. Fully-grown grubs burrow deeper into the soil to pupate, usually in late spring. Most adults do not emerge until the following June or July, when the whole cycle starts over again. Is the vine-weevil life cycle different indoors? Apply to moist substrate or soil and if necessary, irrigate before application. Nematodes need moisture to survive and move. Sufficient moistureEnsure you drench the soil thoroughly. Sprays can’t move through the soil like nematodes. The insecticide then kills the vine weevil larvae via a chemical process. Mix powder in 1.5 L of water and apply evenly to the area to be treated using a watering can or hose end sprayer. Remove and destroy newly-hatched adults to reduce the numbers of eggs laid in the soil. This is best done at night, with a torch, when the weevils are most active. Some growers prefer to use higher water volumes (e.g. one third of the pot volume), to ensure that the nematodes reach the vine weevil larvae in the pots. Care should be taken when using higher water volumes to ensure that the drench does not run out of the bottom of the pot.

Avoid application in direct sunlight; nematodes are uv-sensitive, so apply on a dull day or in the evening Some species of nematodes are plant-eating, but the ones in your biological control product are insect-eating. As such they will have no effect on your plant, as they cannot consume any part of the plant. The nematodes in your biological control product are definitely not these types of nematodes. They only predate on insects and cannot interact with mammals such as dogs or cats. It’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to see the vine weevil eggs in compost or soil as they’re so tiny - less than 1mm. Nematodes move more easily in lighter soils than heavy soils as long as sufficient moisture is available. Larvae (maggots) of a hoverfly Sphaerophoria ruppelli .About half of the hoverfly species found in Britain are predatory on aphids as larvae. The predatory green maggots of S. ruppelli are sometimes sold comercially and can be released on aphid affected plants. Keep the soil moist and warm for at least a few weeks, to make sure that the nematodes remain active.
