About this deal

Under the castle, following the river, there are a series of twisting caves where all sorts of skullduggery can occur. (Provided your hands are small enough to fit into the limited open spaces.) A nice touch is these friendly bats – critters you might have trouble finding again once the build is complete. The designers Mike Psiaki, Milan Madge and Ashwin Visser have done an incredible job here, taking a LEGO Castle into 2022, and infusing it with insane amounts of new techniques that will impress even the most seasoned builders. This is the largest minifigure-scale LEGO Castle set ever, expertly designed to the very high standards we have come to expect in 2022, produced within an almost unlimited budget of quantity, size, variety and more. It’s a LEGO castle that all of that can produce, pulled together with that clean, modern aesthetic of current LEGO design, measured against an engrossing (and time-consuming) build process and faceted with all sorts of fun details.

There’s just so much going on, and as you build the set, you’ll encounter all sorts of great little details hidden in every nook and cranny – like this gorgeous fountain and harpischord. If that weren’t cool enough, she also has a paper cape, with the Lion Knights’ sigil printed onto it, which just elevates her to a whole new level of awesome. LEGO have come a long way with Queens, and I must say, this Warrior Queen Lionne will go down in history as one of the most-loved Castle characters. Special thanks to the LEGO Group for providing this set for review 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle – Set DetailsHere you can see the bar that raises and lowers the drawbridge in place, with two more printed shields and other weaponry at the ready. And here’s a comparison with the original Magisto, which you may remember from sets like 6020 Magic Shop. I do wish he had some printing on him, especially a pouch which has been a staple with Magistos throughout the ages. Oh and we’re not done yet, there’s also a little mini-game that the designers have left where you’re meant to find all these different coloured frogs scattered throughout the castle! It’s a really fun and playful feature and I love everything about this. Here’s a look at the completed Book 1, which assembles the keep and left-hand section of the build.

You’re treated to a walk down memory lane. If you’re a fan of Classic Castle, these sets that they’ve curated, detailing the evolution of LEGO Castles, from the original Yellow Castle, to Nexo Knights to the current 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle is a wonderful read.Lego appears to have based the Lion Knights’ Castle on structures from the late medieval period and the gatehouse in particular reminds me of Bodiam Castle’s iconic frontage. The castle walls and turrets really look the part with a plethora of period details including ramparts, arrow slits, a working drawbridge and a portcullis that slams down in an instant, thanks to a clever Technic mechanism. While the Lion Knights' Castle comprises thousands of pieces and stands as one of the larger Lego sets ever created, it’s still only a small section of what would be a Minifigure-scale castle. After all, it doesn’t even have a keep. But despite the necessary limitations, the designers have done a marvellous job of hiding the set’s diminutive size (comparative to the real world). It can be hinged open to create a sprawling folly or closed up to create a self-contained castle that can be viewed from any angle. In both instances, it looks suitably sized and the absent keep isn’t missed.

My favourite minifigure in the set has to be Queen Lionne, the warrior-queen of the Lion Knights. Unlike other monarchs, she isn’t content with reigning from the throne, she’s clad in armour, wields a sword and is the first to charge into battle. A large part of the castle’s charm is its irregular design. Largely symmetrical castles do exist and Lego could have easily replicated this via a couple of large baseplates. But many castles were added to or altered over the years and the Lion Knights' Castle reflects this. The hulking set is built atop a variety of differently shaped tiles, resulting in a build that’s both believable and bursting with character. I have to give this set a perfect 5 out of 5 score. This is everything my 8-year old self would’ve dreamed about having, and so much more. Here’s a look at the design team – Mike Psiaki, Milan Madge and Ashwin Visser, as well as some trivia on how they’ve modernised the Lion Knights sigil. In the chest is a 1×1 cheese slope in transparent orange. Apparently, that’s a deep cut to something that my casual google searching wasn’t able to explain. The Wizard has a bit of commentary in the instructions:When looking at the piece count you would think the box is much larger than it is is so it is important to break the set down to not just price per part but also price per gram. With LEGO increasing the prices of sets price per part is not always the best indicator. Listed below is some key weight, density and price points for this set. Later in this article we will review how this value compares to other similar sets. This is pure nostalgia and serves as a celebration of everything you love and feel for classic LEGO, wrapped up in an oversized bow of everything awesome about modern LEGO design.

As we start the second book of instructions, we begin the other half of the build we steer away from the living quarters and start building up the main militaristic base of command for Lion’s Knight’s Castle. Just like the first half of the castle this castle is built in a dollhouse style such that you can open it up to see all the details hidden within. Bag 14 – Dungeon foundations While the set’s high pricetag might be a barrier to some, this is a 4000+ piece set, and there aren’t teeny tiny elements here, you’re getting a LOT of LEGO and a lot of useful grey elements to boot, as well as 22 minifigures, so I think, all things considered, this is really good value. Expensive, but does not feel like a rip-off.From the front you can see the main entrance room of the castle, once the drawbridge and portcullis are added however is it not as visible. Bag 20 – Completing the keep’s first level and the drawbridge
