About this deal

The book is long but the writing is so outstanding that I never stopped reading it except to rest my aging eyes. The only part that disappointed me, a bit, was the ending, which felt rushed. It was here that the character of Pirie could have been deepened, but instead we receive only a second-hand recounting of the final investigation and arrest. I wonder if McDermid decided to cut down part of the ending so that the focus remained squarely on Alex and how “suspicion” can mar lives. Oh- ETA: after writing the review I realized that in good conscience I could not give the book even two stars. In the GR rating system when I started here two stars was 'OK' and one 'didn't like it'. I didn't like it so changed to the one star the book deserves. a b "Interview: It can be murder, but Val McDermid's love of Raith is no mystery". The Scotsman. 10 April 2010. The Hill Jordan series of novels was adapted into Wire in the Blood starring Robson Green for ITV. I think it’s entirely spurious,” she says, “to say that true-crime podcasts give you the truth and fiction doesn’t. In novels, I’ve written about things I couldn’t when I was a journalist, for various reasons, principally the libel laws in this country. There’s a real problem with true crime, because people often don’t have the investigative tools to do it in a way that feels credible. A lot of it is ‘he said/she said’ and I’m uneasy about that because it has a deep impact on people’s lives.”Kudos, Madam McDermid for an exciting opening novel. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us next. This absorbing pychological novel of revenge shows British author McDermid at the top of her form...outstanding pacing, character and plot development, plus evocative place descriptions, make this another winner.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) The High Heid Yin's New Claes, published in The Itchy Coo Book o Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales in Scots (2020)
