About this deal

Wheels like the Logitech G29 Driving Force make driving games far more engaging, perhaps too much for those days when you just want to let you brain quietly vegetate after a stressful day of work. I don't really care about shift, rims, 1080-degree, heat, or noise, so it really come down to the gear/belt drive and the pedals. This section sees both wheels as winners, and not in the sense of having them tie with each other. The normal T300 RS pedals are decent. You can regulate their height and resistance and you’ll have a fun time using them. They do, however, have the mortal flaw of having no clutch. Thus, when compared to the also quite decent G29 pedals, the base T300 RS pedals lose.

Fanatec and Thrustmaster charge a lot more for leather wheels. The Logitech G29 gets you higher-end extras at no extra cost. Its pedalboard is much better than anything else at the price too, with a board that has a clutch and very solid metal plates. It’s not plastic rubbish. Coming down, literally, to the pedals, here is where we again have some interesting differences. For a lot of users, Logitech pedals have been a sore point, in particular the brake pedal, where it had that bit of two-tone feel, which is now improved thanks to progressive spring instead of linear one and ditching the rubber stop. There is still a lot of aftermarket mods for it to improve it even further in that regard, being it with just using different springs or getting load-cells for it, which makes it that much better, but as it is, out of the box, they’re alright. When it comes to Thrustmaster’s pedals, the T3PA-GT pedal base which comes with the T300RS GT wheel has a three-pedal setup, so with a clutch, instead of just having a brake and throttle pedal. The whole housing is a bit raised, carrying big and very minimalistic metal pedal covers, which are also adjustable just by unscrewing and moving them around if you need them to be closer for your heal’n’toe technique, similar to Logistics’s solution. The pedal arms are unfortunately not made out of metal, like on Logitech’s or on their T3PA-Pro model, but rather plastic ones, but they do feel and look really sturdy. As for their placement, when you put it on a hard floor, it doesn’t budge at all thanks to a lot of wide rubber padding on the bottom side, while that can’t be said for Logitech ones, I always had to put something between it and the wall so it doesn’t move forward. Like others on this list, Hori offers two different wheels depending on the platform you're playing on. While the Hori Apex is for PS4, the Hori Overdrive is for Xbox One. In terms of performance, I think the T300RS does a great job of providing realism with a generally good feel, and I have enjoyed using it for individual races and long sessions too without any issues. However, every piece of sim racing equipment comes with its limitations, so let’s take a look at those of the T300RS. Limitations Of The T300RS In case you already own a Playseat, then you will be glad to know that you can easily mount the Logitech G29 Gaming Racing Wheel. Besides, it only takes one USB port which is great in case you want to charge your controller. Here’s the big one, the question any potential wheel buyers need to answer: Logitech or Thrustmaster? On Logitech’s side, its pedals are better and we prefer the feel of the leather-topped G29 to the rubbery T300RS.

Whether Fanatec or Thrustmaster is the better racing wheel brand will ultimately come down to your personal tastes and budget. On the Thrustmaster side, since the wheel comes removed from the base, the first step is installing that. With the wheel installed, the base can be mounted because the cables plug into the rear of the unit – which I wish the Logitech had as well. The motor inside the T300RS is a brushless servo motor, which is both efficient and durable. It offers up to 1080 degrees of rotation, and it uses Thrustmaster’s HallEffect AccuRate Technology (HEART) to provide an even more durable product that won’t lose its precision over time. It also holds internal memory, and you can update its firmware as well. The exterior of the steering wheel part itself is also all-plastic, without the metal parts that make these wheels seem a bit less toy-like. There's still sports car-like metal spoke shifters behind the wheel, though.

The overall feel of the wheel is brilliant, and even the rubber rim feels good on the GT edition. It took very little getting used to, and I also enjoy the button placement on the rim. I find myself getting the most use out of the D-pad and the R2 button on the right-hand side, as these are within easy reach of my thumbs while driving. In terms of compatibility with games you shouldn’t have any problems, and as it works with the Thrustmaster ecosystem of peripherals you can pair it with your favorite pieces of sim racing equipment. For the Thrustmaster pedals, even though it doesn’t require as much pressure to fully press the brake pedal to the floor, the rubber grips weren’t enough to keep it in place on the carpet. I had to brace it with something else.

Even when I really push it to its limits, there is no clunking of gears as can be heard with wheels like the G29, but instead there is a real tactile sensation that I can only describe as the feeling of the tires losing traction beneath your hands. This is a very interesting feeling provided by good sim racing wheels, and it really allows you to get a feel for the limits of the car’s traction. Fanatec wheels are perfect if you're looking for a supremely accurate and immersive racing experience. Fanatec's options tend to be on the pricier side.
