About this deal

So this book is coming out on the 28th of October, just two weeks away, and I'm growing increasingly nervous. Equally troubling to me is the thought that people will see this book and think, "Oh, I've heard of that Rothfuss guy. Maybe I'll try him out..." Rothfuss (who has already been compared to the likes of Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, and George R. R. Martin) is poised to be crowned the new king of epic fantasy.”—Barnes & Noble

This section is not a review. For that see further below. Also, those of you who rate books before they are released and haven't read an ARC, what the hell? 5-star , 1-star, whatever-star, you haven't read the book yet so withhold your judgement. Or is that a way of you just rating your excitement for the book? Maybe goodreads should have a "Hype" indicator you can vote on so you can get your fix that way. The art also really helps to make this book. It's really integral to see what Auri sees so you feel more connected with her doings. There are some downsides, though. If I’m going to be the first to break the news, I have to do so fairly early in the publication process so that marketing and PR people can do important things like… talk to bookstores and see if any of them would be interested in, y’know, putting it on the shelves so people can buy it. Also curious whether we should read anything into Elodin giving Auri a single commas fruit, which "is considered a terrible insult if given to one of the Beladari."

Despite that, Slow Regard doesn't forget where it comes from. Auri's meandering through the Underthing may seem relatively aimless, but it fills in some of the gaps left by the surface-centric narrative of Kingkiller. And one of the series' main themes — the power of names — insinuates its way into Slow Regard both subtly and powerfully by book's end. It complements Kingkiller, yet it works its own magic free and clear of it. In general, the book does not care for a plot, being all about the main character, Auri, trying to convey the way her mind works and her feelings and views of the world of Temerant and Kvothe, while also giving the reader a demonstration of her powers and magic, which is exposed on the very end of the book, when she uses her magic to create the candle she gives Kvothe as one of her three gifts.

There is a shyness and a delight in all things. Like shadows and the sun they must play. To be too bold, too brash, on such an adventure would have been to tear the roof off her tunnels and turn her world upside-down simply for the sake of pleasure. There's a strong theme of regret running through The Kingkiller Chronicle, of things done that cannot be undone and things that left the the world a lesser place. There's a decent case for an alternative reading. Auri has retreated from the world, limited her interactions and interventions, and engaged in what amounts to self flagellation not because she was hurt, but because she hurt someone else. The Slow Regard of Silent Things centers on Auri (Kvothe does not appear) after The Name of the Wind. Her life is a solitary one but full of wonder. I just loved the way this book was written. Yes, it was an unconventional novella and didn’t follow the rules of a normal story but even though there didn’t happen a lot and even though this story had absolutely no plot, it still worked somehow?! I think it mainly lived from the atmosphere and the way Auri perceived her environment. And Kvothe for that matter! It’s obvious she’s in love with him and it was nice to know that my theory actually had a real foundation. ;-PWhen I first promised that, I thought it would be easy. But at this point, I think we all know that I can be terribly naive…. any means, without the prior permission in writing of the publisher, nor to be otherwise circulated in any Do you run an indi bookstore and want to be part of some of the cool promotions our PR and Marketing people are planning? You can ping DAW over here. In a lot of ways, it’s going to be similar to The Slow Regard of Silent Things. It’s set in Temerant. It’s going to be illustrated by the fabulous Nate Taylor, and it centers on one of the secondary characters from the Kingkiller Chroniclers: Bast.

I know that you know better when you feel the need to preface your story with a warning, You might not want to buy this book.I just finished the audiobook version. There was something you said in the author’s note at the end, that most people would not want to read this story. You’re right in a way, I wouldn’t have wanted to read it. I definitely prefer to listen to it. Readers expect certain things. People are going to read this and be disappointed. It doesn’t do what a normal story is supposed to do.” I’ve read your book like the others in this thread, and just as they did, I liked it. It made me feel broken as I am, and made me touch that part of me that belongs to those no longer with us.
