About this deal

THE BLURB: Four years ago, I lied. I stood in front of the police, my friends and family, and made up a story, my best one yet. And all of them believed me. The state of affairs is grim enough when the ghost begins to unearth the bone-chilling circumstances of his predecessor's death. And before long, he discovers that the ex-prime minister is not just a charismatic politician who made a few mistakes. He's a dark, tortured man with haunting secrets in his past -- secrets with the power to alter world politics. Secrets with the power to kill. Throughout lunch I’d been half watching an elderly television actor at the next table. He’d been famous when I was a child for playing the single parent of teenage girls in a sitcom. Now, as he rose unsteadily and started to shuffle toward the exit, he looked as though he’d been made up to act the role of his own corpse. That was the type of person whose memoirs I ghosted: people who had fallen a few rungs down the celebrity ladder, or who had a few rungs left to climb, or who were just about clinging to the top and were desperate to cash in while there was still time. I was abruptly overwhelmed by the ridiculousness of the whole idea that I might collaborate on the memoirs of a prime minister. The Ghostwriter must be experienced rather than just revealed. And Torre does an exceptional job with this. She is a wizard with portraying her characters with the focus of transparent light and the self-imposed barriers of one's own darkness. The dialogue is sharp, witty, and at times humorous. Believe me, this book will have you sitting in that pulled up chair lost in your own thoughts at the end. Speechless is about right.......

It's not a thriller - not a mystery - even though it is kind of mysterious and/or suspensy until we find out what happened at the end. ☺ The characters were definitely not the only strength of this book.... The pacing was perfect.... Miss Torre peeled those layers off at just the right speed to keep you completely engaged throughout the entire book.... Harris sets this after the politics of 9/11, he takes an ordinary guy and puts him in a story world that is a mix of conspiracy theory, loose facts and hypothesis. This guy has no name and is completely out of his depth; anything heroic or brave about him is purely accidental. But he’s nice guy, okay, his life is a bit of mess, and the only things he’s got going for him is his sense of doing the right thing and a tenacious curiosity to get to the truth. So not a complete looser, oh wait, it’s these strengths that lead him down a dangerous trail. Oooops.

Political thriller, a ghostwriter turns reluctant amateur sleuth to discover the person he’s ghosting, a British ex-Prime minister, is not as charming and squeaky clean as he seems.

This one is somewhat of a departure for Robert Harris - despite the main character Adam Lang being clearly a version of Tony Blair and Lang's wife being a fictional equivalent of Cherie Blair, this is essentially new ground for Harris as the novel is not based on true events as such, and therefore not historical fiction as per usual for Harris. The film finally began production in February 2009 in Germany, at the Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam. Germany stood in for London and Martha's Vineyard due to Polanski's inability to travel to those places, as Polanski had fled the US in 1978 after pleading guilty to unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. The majority of exteriors, set on Martha's Vineyard, were shot on the island of Sylt in the North Sea, and on the ferry MS SyltExpress. The harbor exterior were shot on both the German island of Sylt, and the Danish island of Rømø. The exterior set of the house where much of the film takes place, however, was built on the island of Usedom, in the Baltic Sea. Exteriors and interiors set at a publishing house in London were shot at Charlottenstrasse 47 in downtown Berlin (Mitte), while Strausberg Airport near Berlin stood in for the Vineyard airport. [11] A few brief exterior shots for driving scenes were shot by a second unit in Massachusetts, without Polanski or the actors. [12]
