About this deal

Publishers Weekly stated, "the appealing main characters are notable for their persistence—Aderyn through ever-mounting obstacles, and Ellis through his chronic pain. The story serves as a meditation on the complicated relationship between the living and the dead, combining fear, humor and enchantment in equal measure, and alloying them with humor." [3] Book Riot placed the book on its list of 16 " #OwnVoices" titles for featuring a disabled character, noting that Ellis suffers from chronic pain and is the book's secondary main character. [4] Literary Hub agreed, pointing out that the character's disability does not define him wholly but is a part of him, stating, "Ellis, a mapmaker, is an apprentice with a mysterious past, but the mystery surrounding him is never defined by his chronic pain." [5] Stephen's non-fiction, fiction and children's titles have been published in twenty-one foreign languages. All of his novels have remained continuously in print in the United States and Britain since they were first published. He has won numereous industry awards for his novels and children's books, and in 2003 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the University of Nebraska. Slayton is a small town that is just a little left of peculiar. The legends, the myths, and the townspeople lend to the naturally unnerving atmosphere and feeling of macabre. All of Brian's books are also available in audiobook editions. His novels THE BONE HOUSE and SEASON OF FEAR were both finalists for Best Audiobook of the Year in Thriller/Suspense. I'm not sure if I missed it, or if the reason behind the dead crows was washed away, but I'd like to know why they ended up in the lake...., although it was a good creepy beginning.

The small village of Slayton has always been covered in a shroud of darkness that cannot be seen but is usually felt by most of the residents who live there. Some people want to leave Slayton but they just can't find the means to to so where others choose to live there knowing their dark secrets are safe since everyone seems to be hiding something they want kept from the light. I got so frustrated for Cora. The mum in me wanted to help her and keep her baby safe. The world was totally against this mum, surely everyone deserves a second chance??! Even Sarah at points annoyed me with her attitude to this vulnerable woman. Matters improved from 1639 with the arrival of a new rector, Cambridge graduate James Strkie, a former grammar school head-teacher in Preston; there were considerable structural alterations in 1683 (including, I suspect, the removal of the original bone-house) and in 1702 a report shows a massive increase in funeral services, with 54 burials, and church activity was much better regarding marriages and baptisms, with a population heading for 1,200.

A body is placed in a temporary grave, and then sometime later the bones are removed, cleaned and placed in the ossuary – the final resting place, a common practice for both Catholic and Eastern Orthodox communities. However, the obvious problem with St Cuthbert’s ever utilising a bone hole would have been the difficulty constructing one in sand, and with the water table being so close to the surface.

In the court of Facebook and online speculation, evidence is secondary to feelings leaving Sarah and her troops with an ever complicated web to unravel both from the past, and in the present. Mark Bradley is having a tough time. He and his wife, Hillary, moved to an idyllic island in rural Door County, northern Wisconsin, from a Chicago suburb to live on their salaries as teachers and raise a happy family. Mark, however, was accused of sexual harassment when the mother of shy teenaged student, Tresa, read the torrid accounts of an inappropriate affair in Tresa's diary. Tresa insisted her writings were all fantasy, but Mark was fired anyway and has been out of a job for a year. His wife, Hillary is still a dance coach at the high school, but her reception by the locals has become increasingly chilly.

I suspect the bone-storing area, probably in this format, was in the same vicinity, as far away from the church as possible, within the boundary of the oldest part of the churchyard. Mark accompanies his wife and her dance students to Florida for a competition. It's supposed to be a relaxing getaway, but Mark is accosted on the beach by Tresa's younger sister, Glory. When Glory is found dead, a witness is found that saw Mark kissing Glory very late at night. He insists they didn't kiss, and that he didn't kill the girl. Hillary wants to believe him, but she's exhausted from standing by him during the ordeal of the past year. And she's not quite sure he's telling the truth. This was another killer addition in the Slayton Thriller series. This town just seems to attract and create all kinds of deranged and disturbed individuals. I enjoy how Caroline Mitchell creates tension and builds her plots. She also knows how to create both creepy and mentally wounded characters. Just when I thought I knew everything, I was thrown off by a twist and a reveal. I enjoyed the layers in this story and how everything came together. This book had everything I like in a mystery. The characters were well developed and likable. Mark is a teacher that has lost his job due to accusations of an inappropriate affair with a student. His wife still teaches at the same small town school that Mark did. Being in a small Minnesota town myself and in the field of education, I can imagine the consequences of it. Although Mark is innocent, no one believes him.
