About this deal

If someone suggests you should spend a night at The Bloody Inn, you should think twice! Some of the guests leave this inn inside of a body bag…

The Bloody Inn is played over a series of rounds where each player gets two actions. The actions include: bribing people, building annexes, killing travelers, or burying corpses. All this is done with the goal of stealing the most money from the victims. Finally, when it comes to player scaling, The Bloody Inn plays well with any of its player count. I do think the game plays best with four players though. Not only does it have more cards coming into the game, but since you can bury your corpses under any players annex, it allows you to spread out the wealth a little bit. In a 2 player game, I never wanted to bury under my opponent’s annex because it’s giving both of us money. Final Thoughts: Even if you kill a guest, you are not allowed to rob them until they get a proper burial. We’re civilized people after all… Any travelers still in the inn go to the discard pile and whichever room they were in earns that player 1 Franc. Published by Arcane Wonders, Sheriff of Nottingham is an Origins Award winner as 2015’s best board game of the year. Only taking around 60 minutes to play, Sheriff of Nottingham allows for up to five players.

Gameplay

Players begin with a ten Franc cheque and five Francs in cash. Of course, none of your accomplices trust you enough to accept a cheque. So you’ll need to earn some money or visit the notary to cash the cheque if you run low on funds. Earn too much money and you’ll need to launder it before you can make any more. Madeline takes the baron and places him on the table, in her play area, with his Dead side visible. Each round is divided into 3 phases: welcome travelers (evening), player actions (night), and end of round (morning). Module 2: The Notables — The notables are a new type of guest who replace the nobles from the base game. Finally, each card still in a player’s hand costs them 1 Franc per card they wish to retain for the next round.

The Prince is paying a visit to Nottingham! As a merchant, this is your chance to profit from the crowded city. But beware, the Sheriff of Nottingham guards the city. Can you get your goods past the city gates? Either play it safe with the legal goods or attempt to sneak through with contraband to earn big cash. France 1831: In a remote corner of Ardeche, the little village of Peyrebeille sees numerous travelers pass through... A family of greedy rural farmers is determined to make its fortune, and has devised a diabolical stratagem to achieve this goal: Invest in an inn so they can rob traveling guests, getting rich without arousing the suspicions of the police! build an annex (move a card from their hand to their player area; it now represents a structure under which a victim may be buried) The Bloody Inn, by Nicholas Robert, is a game of murder, robbery, bribery, and burial – the challenges of making a living as a serial killing family in the hospitality industry. It accommodates one to four players for 45 to 60 minutes and is suitable for players aged 14 and over. The grim and macabre theme draws on the historic events of an establishment known as L’auberge rouge (The Red Inn), and the murderous family that amassed significant wealth over the decades they ran it. A Grave UndertakingThe rules are very simple, there aren’t even any words to read! The easy rules make it ideal for new players to learn, and even non-board gamers to join in. Place the Guest card in front of you on the table, with its Dead Guest side visible; this now becomes a corpse. There is no limit to the number of corpses you can have in front of you, but watch out for the police! Carcassonne is fully customisable, with plenty of expansions to choose from. Build rivers, bridges, cathedrals, markets, farms, the list goes on. Add extra tiles and features if you want a longer game or a varied experience.

Bribe a guest: Choose a traveler in the inn, play as many cards from your hand equal to the rank of the guest being bribed (0-3) and take the bribed guest into your hand. Any cards you played that have the bribe symbol are returned to your hand with the rest being discarded. A Grave UndertakingThe players will take one Key token and place it on a room that is unclaimed. The player who is the greediest will take the Starter Player token, and the game is ready to begin! GAMEPLAY The Bloody Inn was one of the 2015 Essen releases that I was really looking forward to trying. A unique theme combined with some stellar artwork always piques my interest. All this combined with cards that can be used in more than one way is usually a win in my book. Play on the table as many Guest cards from your hand as the rank of the Traveler you just chose (e.g. 0 cards for a rank-0 Traveler; 3 cards for a rank-3 Traveler). Bury a corpse: Choose one of your face down corpses. Discard cards equal to its rank, returning any with the coffin symbol to your hand. Place the corpse under anyone’s annex. Gain the money listed on the corpse. If you buried it under an opponent’s annex, you split the money. Most board gamers are familiar with the tile-placement game Carcassonne. It's a classic game by designer Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, now published by Z-Man Games. The base game is 2-5 players; however, expansions add extra player meeples for up to six players. For even larger groups of friends, simply add extra meeples to allow for extra players. Taking only 30-45 minutes a game, Carcassonne is an easy and ideal pub play.

The Bloody Inn does a lot of things right, from its fantastic artwork down to its solid mechanics. I could see the macabre theme being a turn off for some, but to be honest, there is nothing gruesome about artwork that should turn anyone off. So I think only the most sensitive of players need to worry about the theme here. Whether or not their plan will work out, one thing is certain: Not every guest will leave this inn alive. Gameplay Any money you do make will need careful management. Unexplained wealth draws unwelcome attention. There’s a limit on how much you can earn without laundering the cash. To do this you’ll need to visit the crooked notary. But doing so takes time you could otherwise spend on more profitable pursuits. In the event of a tie, the winner is the richest player who has the most corpses under his annexes. If there is still a tie, then the game ends in a tie, and you must play again!!Each round, players get only two actions and let me tell you, you will always feel like you need at least twice that, if not more. That’s actually one of the things I like and don’t like about The Bloody Inn. Cards can be built for their special powers, which also allows players to bury corpses under them.
