About this deal

Foxx is good fun as Dillon/Electro though he’s missing for large parts and DeHaan brings a sinister presence even if his storyline is not the most convincing.

The height channels get a satisfying workout too, whether it’s dialogue or environmental effects, helping to create a wider and taller soundstage. Amazing heroic social events, including battling waves of bosses and opponents in Mysterio’s Arena! The excellent Rhys Ifans plays the one armed Dr Curt Conners, who used to work with Peter's father at Oscorp until he disappeared, and since then has been struggling to complete their work on cross species genetics on his own; unable to discover the final equation that will allow it to go forward. All the performances from the cast are top notch. Real life couple Garfield and Stone definitely provide a short hand within their characters that transcends simply playing in love: they are in love, and it shows. This helps with the story’s arc for both of them and makes its conclusion all the more affecting. DeHann may be second fiddle in the billing on the poster, but he’s the standout villain in this one, providing a much more nuanced and relatable person to inhabit that Electro: the persecuted nerd (snore). I must admit I wasn't expecting much from The Amazing Spiderman. I knew the special effects would be great, but I had my doubts whether Marc Webb would be able to add anything new and interesting to the Spiderman franchise, particularly since it has only been a few years since the Sam Raimi version was in theaters. Adventure in a larger 3D open-world Manhattan with 6 detailed districts to explore, from the bustling Times Square to picturesque Central Park! Marc Webb has done a fine job. There are holes in the script and story, but they are not that noticeable, and it can get a bit clichéd at times, but these things are to be expected in a big budget film such as this; however they can also be forgiven.

There’s also the rush and thrill of the action sequences which are big, brash and over-the-top in a comic-book way. And while the film’s tone is erratic, when it works the film is fun. What's really interesting about 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is the way it makes Connors a character that we come to know and understand, more than we do Uncle Ben in his limited time. This seems awkward, but I felt it made more sense, since the 2002 iteration seemed like it was a film divided into distinct chapters, rather than maintaining a steady flow and story. We don't have lengthy transformation sequences for the villain, as story is the focus rather than effects, and it works, helping keep this extraordinary story grounded in realism rather than going off the fantasy deep end. The villain, who seems like a bit of the ol' Jekyll and Hyde, is one we care for, and his path mirrors Parker's from loss to gain, though it is twisted in a more tragic manner. There was a risk in this film, just like the downfall of ‘Spider-man 3’, of having too many stories choking the film and not allowing plot threads to breathe and resonate. They avoid it, just. The narrative is a busy one, with multiple players, but everything cross-connects and comes to bear in an entertaining and satisfying way. Can I design desktop wallpapers? Yes, you can! Denis Leary who is always good joins the cast as Gwenn's father – police Captain Stacey, and as is becoming a trend in super hero movies, big name actors are playing the parts of the hero's parents, or in this case uncle and aunt, with Sally Field and Martin Sheen taking on the roles of Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Both, as usual give very polished performances.

Sound Quality

The Amazing Spider-Man' works, it really does. When the film begins, we're introduced to a young Peter and his parents for the briefest of moments, to establish loss, and really drive home his living situation with Aunt May and Uncle Ben. From here, we have the outcast rather than the nerd, and establish his awkward relationship of sorts with Gwen Stacy (Stone), which directly ties in to the Oscorp segment that puts the film in motion. This film, unlike the 2002 version, seeks to keep Peter Parker in high school, as the innocence of the character, his naivety and euphoria over being "born again," as it were, works far better as a dependent minor than as an adult making his way in the big city all by his lonesome. While segments like the humiliation of Flash Thompson (Chris Zylka) are present in a different fashion, we're mostly given a different Peter, one that younger audiences can relate to more. More specifically, he doesn't spout out dialogue that sounds like it's straight out of 'Pleasantville.'

At 142 minutes there’s still a feeling it needs room to breathe, a film stitched together by exposition scenes that appear to take place in one elevator (or store cupboard) of Oscop. Fine detail is superb. You can count (if you really want to) all the small hexagons that make up (much improved) Spider-Man suit, as well as the texture and details on clothes and faces, whether it’s the amount of stubble on Garfield’s face or the spot above DeHaan’s eyebrow. The 4K disc really does reveal new details.
