It will not do any harm to make a hole in the ice, if you choose to do so, and it can be beneficial for fish and other creatures. The best way to do this is to leave a ball or other floating object in the pond which can be removed to leave a hole after it freezes. Alternatively you could use a pan of hot water placed on the ice to melt a hole. Never pour hot water onto the ice or use chemicals or salt. Similarly, do not be tempted to smash the ice as this can damage the pond liner and the pond life. Badr, E.S.A.; Al-Naeem, A.A. [ Google Scholar] [ CrossRef] In balanced ponds and lakes there is enough phosphate for moderate growth of waterplants but not so much as to cause excessive algae growth. One recommended treatment is barley straw or barley straw extract. There is still a lot of debate over how effective this is, but it is probably worth a try as it will not cause any harm even if it doesn’t help. There are plenty of other treatments for algae available to buy and if you do decide to try them, opt for ‘natural’ or ‘bio active’ products. These may not be an ideal solution as even ‘wildlife-friendly’ products can disrupt the natural balance of the pond and cause more problems than they solve; they may also only be a temporary solution.

You may have heard of phosphate as one of the main ingredients of garden fertilisers (“NPK” = Nitrogen, Phosphorus & Potassium). In ponds there are usually ample amounts of nitrogen in the water, but if phosphorus/phosphate levels are kept low then algae growth will be limited. Chen, Y.; Liu, P.; Zhang, R.; Hu, Y.; Yu, Z. Chemical Kinetic Analysis of the Activation Energy of Diffusion Coefficient of Sulfate Ion in Concrete. Chem. Phys. Lett. 2020, 753, 137596. The other major source is fish food which contains some phosphorus as it is an essential part of the diet. A large proportion will pass through and be released in the fish waste. This waste releases phosphates into the water, and also stores phosphates within the sediments on the pool base. As well as being decorative and encouraging wildlife, pond plants such as waterlilies, submerged plants, floating plants, irises and other marginal plants can all use up the phosphates in the water and help the pond to reach a better balance. Top up ponds with fish if the water level drops significantly. Evaporation in hot or windy weather can reduce oxygenation, causing problems for fish. Ideally use rainwater from a butt, as the nutrients in tap water encourage algae. If you must use mains water, warm it in the sun first and add in small quantities, to avoid a sudden temperature drop. Topping up isn’t usually necessary if there are no fish – most wildlifewill cope with fluctuating water levels. If the pond liner becomes visible, consider adding a stone-covered liner or allowing pond-side plants to grow over the edge, to help disguise the exposed liner and protect it from sunlight Nasir, M.J.; Abdulhasan, M.J.; Ridha, S.Z.A.; Hashim, K.S.; Jasim, H.M.
