About this deal

Today we’re talking about “The Thrifty Witch’s Book of Simple Spells: Potions, Charms, and Incantations for the Modern Witch” by Wren Maple. This is certainly not the first book about affordable witchcraft practices. I’m quite the fan of “Witchcraft on a Shoestring” by Deborah Blake. Many view these sorts of books as “beginner.” However, I find there is always something to take away from books like these, and “The Thrifty Witch’s Book of Simple Spells” is no exception. Purification Spell: Add apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and epsom salt to your bathwater for purification.

In the age of nineteenth-century empires, there was a particular colonial interest in Christian Ethiopian manuscripts with thousands plundered and traded by Europeans. Amongst them are numerous works of magico-religious significance. Collectors were particularly fascinated with the distinctive amuletic scroll texts written in Ge’ez, an ancient ‘dead’ language that remained the official liturgical script of various Ethiopian Christian churches. They were mostly written on parchment by the debtera, a cadre of Orthodox holy men who made money from healing and offering magical services as well as providing religious duties. The small scrolls they sold, which also included stylised Christian iconography, were kept in cylindrical leather containers or were tied up with cloth and worn on the person for protection against the evil eye and ill fortune. Larger scrolls consisting of stitched together parchment leaves were sometimes hung on walls unfolded. a b Cushman, Stephen (2012). Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics: Fourth Edition. Princeton, ProQuest Ebook Central: Princeton University Press. p.681.The writing is clear and concise yet personable giving examples of what the author does when certain spells or things don't work for her saying that everything won't work for everyone. The ingredient/material lists for the spells gives substitutes for the crystals and hard to get items, (which are few and far between,) and the steps are very easy to follow and simple, making it easy for even the newest practitioner. And like a breath of fresh air this book encourages simplicity and crossover ingredients. Quite logical and practical, enabling thrifty peeps and minimalists alike the chance to practice some of Wrens spell suggestions without breaking the bank. And remember, meditation is free! And in this powerful, simple and honest statement — Wren releases all of us from the need to acquire materialistic goods to practice. Witchcraft is a practice that’s also a culture with a multi-million dollar industry and with this one sentence, the world of rituals, spells and casting is more inclusive. It’s more approachable. Protection Spell: Scatter dried chili peppers or cayenne pepper around your house to keep harm away.

Then feed a small piece to each of your suspects. The culprit will be unable to swallow their piece of cheese, thus admitting their guilt. Mischievous magic Find sources: "Incantation"– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( May 2014) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message)The variety of spells is amazing to me, there's fast and long term turn spells, spell jars and pouches, there are ones for self-confidence, attracting friends, improving your mental state, finding financial freedom, even reducing fatigue. The fatigue spell is particularly interesting to me however the variety of psychic spells is even more impressive. At time of writing this I plan on performing the claircognizance spell at Mabon, I might update this review after I see the results. Protection Spell: Bury quartz crystals pointing outwards at the four corners of your property line to keep evil away from your home. In medieval literature, folklore, fairy tales, and modern fantasy fiction, enchantments are charms or spells. This has led to the terms "enchanter" and "enchantress" for those who use enchantments. [2] The English language borrowed the term "incantation" from Old French in the late 14th century; the corresponding Old English term was gealdor or galdor, "song, spell", cognate to ON galdr. The weakened sense "delight" (compare the same development of "charm") is modern, first attested in 1593 ( OED). Shams al-maʻārif (“The Sun of Knowledge”) was a practical manual of Islamic and Islamicised magic. It was written by Aḥmad ibn al-Būnī, who was born in Algeria but was based in Egypt. He was a thirteenth-century Sufi scholar of mathematics, philosophy, and the occult. Once copies of the Shams al-maʻārif began to circulate in various versions beyond Sufi scholars the book went on to have an enduring influence on Islamic magic tradition and practice. It contained relatively little theory and was full of recipes and instructions for creating talismans. Al-Būnī argued that the only way to talk to or harness the jinn, angels, and other spirits was through the potent combination of Arabic letters known as ilm al ‐ huruf (the science of the letters), magic number and letter squares, the 99 ‘beautiful names of God’, and occult geometry. The author states early on that they try to avoid certain herbs due to appropriation and overharvesting etc.. but then goes on to highlight sage as a herb to use. I found this confusing?... I know very, very little about witchcraft and spells but I was educated by someone just recently about sage being overharvested.. so, I'm just a bit unsure.

Purification Spell: Cut an onion in half and hide both halves inside your home to remove harmful vibes. Money Spell: Simmer cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice in water on the stove to ensure prosperity of your home. All that aside -- visually, I found this book very appealing and easy to read. It's a pleasant, pretty book. I liked the spells and the intention behind them, the illustrations and mindfulness inspiration.it may not have a correspondence section, but a bibliography section of resources, both online and in book format you can use to grow your craft; even some resources where you can shop your herbs and crystals! Words of incantation are often spoken with inflection and emphasis on the words being said. The tone and rhyme of how the words are spoken and the placement of words used in the formula may differ depending on the desired outcome of the magical effect. [3] Garry, Jane (2005).
