The fruits add a mouth watering tang that bounces off the duller cereal notes. Palate: This is where the promise is broken. Similar tropical fruits and some spice but overwhelmed by something unpleasantly bitter. I let it breathe for a while but it can't seem to shake that terrible taste. Sheep Dip is humorously called after the liquid that is used to delouse sheep. It is a full-bodied blend made up of 16 Whiskies ranging from 8 to 21 years old.

SMALL BATCH PRODUCED – The whiskies are matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks and blended in small batches for up to 6 months, then married to achieve a smoother, richer taste before bottling at 40% Alcohol by Volume. The nose opens with oats and barley. There are lots of cereal notes coming through, giving it a fresh and easy going vibe. There is also a burst if apples and lemons that serve to give a lovely tang against the smooth toffee, which eventually melts into caramel. Sheep Dip was first bottled by a gentleman farmer and publican as his in-house whisky around 1974. The pub was in Oldbury on Severn, and as its popularity grew with the locals, so the small concern of MJ Dowdeswell & Co Ltd grew. It eventually managed to supply the likes of Fortnum & Mason and enter the US, Canada and New Zealand markets. Nose: Astringent note of lemon furniture polish assaults the nose first, with a musty overtone. By God this actually smells like sheep dip (or more likely sheep as my memories of sheep-related smells are in the distant past). No, that’s not a good thing. Lanolin (another sheep-related smell) and dry fungal – almost sulfury – malt arrive next. A rest in the glass dissipates these, leaving some pretty standard ex-bourbon notes of light caramel, nougat, honey, and vanilla.If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. The first incarnation of Sheep Dip whisky was Original Oldbury Sheep Dip, an 8-year-old blend of 16 single malts. The quaint and intriguing name was allegedly (I’ll repeat that, allegedly) chosen to ensure that West Country farmers could put invoices for cases of it through their books without accountants noticing.
