About this deal

Super Battle emulates the perfect crescendo; a smooth and circumspect event but as the skyscraper grows, the tension begins to build until the grand finale of everything toppling over and exploding like a firework of urban landscape. Oh, and we’ve saved the best until last. Rhino Hero comes with its eponymous hero in the form of a grinning rhino meeple – brilliant – and if your roof card has the rhino symbol on it, the next player has to move the rhino onto that roof card’s symbol!

The game box states that Rhino Hero Super Battle (designed by Scott Frisco and Steven Strumpf) is suitable for 5-99-year-olds. What’s amazing about this game is that not only are people of all ages capable of playing the game but the rules contain great ways of allowing younger players to stand a chance of winning against older players. These include: Place the foundation with either side face-up in the center of the table. Shuffle all roof cards and distribute five to every player. If you are only two players each player receives seven roofs cards. The remaining roofs cards are put in a provision pile away from the foundations. Get the walls and Rhino Hero ready. Foundations: Roll the light blue die. The number rolled indicates how many floors your superhero can be moved up the skyscraper. The first player consideration is likely to lead to interesting discussions….the player who is the best climber can start! They make their move which consists of six action points: Rhino Hero is the extremely popular prequel to Rhino Hero Super Battle. Created by the innovative HABA company, this game is the modern-day Jenga with a far better theme and lots more interactivity, making it a fantastic first step into the new-era of “board gaming.”Each player starts the game with five cards, unless there are only two of you in which case you start with seven. Your hand is made up of roof cards only, with each one having a different action on it that, once played, affect the game in some way. The wall tiles remain in a draw pile to the side which should be taken from at the beginning of each players turn. The next player has to take a rest and lose a turn. It's then the turn of the next player. If you are two players, it's immediately your turn again. Additional Card We strongly recommend Rhino Hero in both categories of cognitive accessibility. Emotional Accessibility On a player’s turn, they begin by selecting a floor card to use. Each card shows one or two wall symbols, and may show a spider-monkey as well. Walls come in two heights, so the player takes the walls shown on their card and adds them to the tower, placing the floor card on top of them. The marks on the roof determine how the walls of the following floor have to be erected, and the symbols on the roof determine certain building conditions, which might mix things up a bit. The aim of the game is to be the first to have placed one's roof cards.

The first player correctly places walls on the guidelines provided on the start tile. From here, they choose a roof tile from their own hand to give the next player their platform to test their steel. If this roof tile is plain, the next player goes ahead as before. However, if there is a symbol on the roof card, it may affect the next player's turn. The player who made the house collapse loses the game. The player left with the fewest roofs cards wins the game.On a turn, players will add either tall walls or short walls to a dictated by a floor piece that has already been played. You may also have to add a dastardly spider monkey to the construction! Then you will add your own floor piece for someone else to build on. Rhino Hero: Super Battle takes a game that was decent and makes it superb. Playing this game is a blast, and I recommend it for kids and adults alike.

Rhino Hero is about a heroic rhinoceros, clad in a cape and cowl, trying to scale a skyscraper! (If that hasn’t grabbed your attention, nothing will.) Technically this is a children’s game by hugely popular publisher HABA, but don’t let that put you off. While you can – and will – enjoy this with children of all ages (realistically aged five and up, for them to grasp the dexterity concept), it’s also guaranteed to be a smash hit with the adults, too! Of course, all of this is based on the assumption that players have some degree of visual discrimination. The game is not remotely playable in situations of near or total blindness given the fact it involves the placement of cardboard walls within tight constraints with little margin for error. This in the end is the primary accessibility concern with the game. In many ways it’s comparable to competitively building a house of cards – it’s certainly not impossible for those that are totally blind but it requires a considerable degree of extra care and attention. Within Rhino Hero, all the other players are hoping you fail and engineering the circumstances as best they can to bring that failure about. But before you can do so you have to build the floor, with one or two walls. Have a look at the marks on the foundation or on the last roof card that has been placed. This section isn’t going to be a surprise I’m sure. Rhino Hero is a game of reasonably fine positioning of walls and roofs and rhinos, and doesn’t lend itself to verbalisation. The card-play is trivial, and only sets up the context of the following placement challenge. This is a game you absolutely have to play physically to get any enjoyment. That means that those with impairments in terms of fine or gross motor skills will be unable to play. He is as strong as a lion and as smart as a fox but also as heavy as a rhinoceros. So when Rhino Hero is around even the most robust tower may start to wobble. Can you help Rhino Hero accomplish his wobbly construction mission?

I have two small negatives about Super Battle. First, it feels like a missed opportunity that this game does not integrate with the original, and second, the box is far larger than it needs to be. These issues aside, however, the production of this game is top-notch, and it’s great fun to play. Often there is kind of dichotomy here – every impairment category we look is a multi-axis spectrum of severity and symptom and impact. The game characteristics that would stop someone with Parkinsons playing a particular game might not be a problem for someone making use of a wheelchair. However, Rhino Hero proclaims on the front of the box that it’s ‘a card game that can grow over 3 feet’. It’s not often it gets that high, but two feet isn’t unusual and one and a half is probably where the median lies. As such, if it’s not possible to stand it often won’t be possible to play at all. The first player to build all of their roof cards wins the game. Alternatively, if the building collapses, the player who caused the collapse automatically loses, and the player with the fewest roof cards in hand wins. The rules to Super Battle are so deceptively simple that even your pet dog will understand them, although dogs don’t have thumbs so probably best not to play this with your dog…or any animal really. The superheroes then start searching for the twin card with the missing pair after the villain player turns over the sand timer. If a superhero player thinks they’ve found it, they immediately mark the card with their play figure. If the correct twin card is marked, the round ends and they receive both twin cards. If the incorrect twin card is marked, they may not continue searching anymore and the round continues. If all superhero players marked the wrong twin card or the sand timer runs out, the villain player wins the round and keeps the twin cards they hid.
