About this deal

The SCAA only certifies home brewers that meet their rigorous technical requirements to brew a Golden Cup of coffee. According to the SCAA: Also attached to the handle of the kettle when you take it out is a simple half fold information card (I assume to provide information when the kettle is on display at a department store). It echos much of the box’s marketing info and some basic instructions for use.

Overall, pouring is smooth. Like most kettles, the last couple ounces can dribble a bit, however. We found the 2-quart capacity large enough for anything we used the kettle for, from tea to pour-over coffee. This elegant stainless steel electric kettle holds 1.7 liters and has six preset heat setting for steeping different types of tea at the proper temperature, even if you can’t remember what tea needs which temperature. A blue LED indicates when the water is ready and the 30-minute keep-warm feature holds the temperature in case you’re not quite ready to brew. The shape of the lid, especially its hollow rim (the bulge above the O-ring seal) traps about a half cup of condensed steam, and I've not yet succeeded in removing the kettle lid - which is a tight fit and takes some force to remove - without splattering this condensed water. Even tipping and shaking the kettle won't get all of it out before you take the lid off. This is another good reason to cool the kettle before removing the lid, and for drying the inside of the lid well after use. This is a very, very comfortable kettle to use. OXO likes to push the word “balanced” in the marketing for this kettle, and they’re spot on. The handle feels awesome and has the right amount of heft and angles and grippy feel to make it a joy to use and control. The weight, for an electric kettle with a built in heating element, is really good too.

Decide whether you’d like a model that also has an infuser for use with loose and blooming teas. There are tea kettles that have built-in infusers, as well as pots that have removable infusers. You’ll even find units with an infuser basket that can be placed directly in your teacup.Cuisinart Aura 2-Quart Tea Kettle: If you want an even cheaper option than OXO without sacrificing too much, the Cuisinart Aura is your best bet. The shining star of this kettle is the trigger on the handle that you can use to open the spout with one hand. And it came in a competitive sixth place in the boil speed test, finishing around 40 seconds later than the two winners. But there were some downsides to this kettle: The handle got hot during the 1.5-quart boil speed test and cleanup was not a breeze thanks to narrow opening. Our Lab team has spent collective decades working in professional kitchens, developing recipes, and testing kitchen gear. Of course, all those lovely features (along with the Zwilling brand name) are things you have to pay for. The kettle also can't go in the dishwasher like many stovetop models, though its stainless steel interior is easy enough to wipe down with a soapy sponge. Pouring at Full Capacity: We boiled another 1.5 quarts of water in each kettle over medium-high heat using the same-size gas burners. Once each kettle reached a boil, we poured eight ounces into a cup and determined how easy the kettle was to hold and pour from, whether or not the handle or spout lid became hot to touch, and how the water flowed out when the kettle was at capacity. Pouring at Half Capacity: We repeated the above test, this time filling each kettle with .75 quarts of water, and observed if this changed how far we had to tilt the kettle, how hot the kettle was to touch, and if it poured with precision and control.

The SCAA recognizes home brewers that meet our longstanding rigorous technical requirements. These requirements are based on decades of industry knowledge and research by the Coffee Brewing Center. All SCAA Certified Brewers have met these requirements, which are based generally on proper water temperature, brewing time, and ability to brew within the SCAA Gold Cup recommendations. If a brewer passes all of the tests conducted by the SCAA, that brewer will be recognized as an exemplary home brewer and join the short list of SCAA Certified Brewers. I bought this in Sept. 2011 as a replacement for a 10 year old enameled kettle that was damaged in an accident that made it unsafe to to use. Value: After concluding all of our other tests, we revealed the retail prices of the kettles. Stovetop kettles are generally less expensive than electric ones, so we looked at the categories separately, comparing individual prices to the average for each type. If you use loose teas, make sure you store them in a sealed container in a cool dry location. Otherwise, they will absorb the moisture from the air. Do not fill the kettle above half way up the spout opening on the inside of the kettle. I didn't need to read that myself as I am familiar with steam engines and also have been using kettles for 6 decades. OF COURSE THE KETTLE WILL SPLATTER YOU IF YOU FILL IT BEYOND THAT POINT: the steam will be under maximum pressure (DUH), unable to escape except through the tight lid seal and through the spout by pushing the water out the spout. Properly filled and not used with more heat than necessary to bring to a boil, this is not a problem.

Two extra features we especially appreciate are that users can schedule the kettle to boil up to 24 hours in advance, and there's recommended water temperatures for different drinks, including coffee and tea. All in all, the Corvo EKG Pro Studio Edition is an outstanding kettle you can count on. Well, I was completely surprised — in a very good way — to see how lightning fast the OXO: On kettle is. In my timing tests, it routinely took less than 4 minutes to go from cold tap water to 205F, our target temperature. This is easily 2x faster than my gas range does at the “blast” setting for its flame, and faster than any other electric kettle I currently have. Later on in my testing, I was able to find out a bit more about how OXO achieves this, and how the kettle “cheats” a little bit. There are some cons to consider before purchasing, however. First, the item is fairly loud when boiling; this may not be an issue to many, but it is worth noting nonetheless. The lid also doesn't open all the way, which can make it a little difficult to clean. If you own any OXO Good Grips items, you know how well they work.
