The recording process for Don't Believe the Truth was prolonged. The album was originally supposed to be released around summer/autumn 2004, with an initial three to four-week session produced by Death in Vegas. [8] The recording finally began after Alan White's departure in January 2004 at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall, though the group were not satisfied with the results, as Noel Gallagher said: "Unfortunately, after the recording process we decided we didn't like anything we had played/recorded during those three weeks, and because of commitments with Death in Vegas, Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes couldn't find any more time to give to the project." In hindsight, Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory aren't much more than competent albums that managed to score a handful of genuinely triumphant, anthemic singles-- and Don't Believe the Truth certainly falls well short of the high-water mark those records set for the band. A decidedly scattershot affair, the new record only exceeds the sum of its parts for a few fleeting moments.

Of course we all want ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ to be the mindblowing return to the glory days of Knebworth, Downing Street and Supernova Heights that their creators claim it is. But this is emphatically a different group to the Oasis of ten years (ten years!) ago. Of the 11 songs here, five are Noel’s, three are Liams , two are by Andy Bell and one is by Gem Archer, which only makes Noel the leader of this band on a first-past-the-post basis. As for Liam, his voice sounds great again, and his song writing has come on leaps and bounds since his previous efforts. "Love Like A Bomb" is a gentle acoustic number with beautiful twinkling piano and "The Meaning Of Soul" is another of the album's highlights. Imagine early b-side "Headshrinker" played acoustic, if you can. At only 1 minute 43 seconds it's practically gone before you know it, but still manages to leave you gasping. It's so good you could almost forgive Liam for the Standing On the Shoulder Of Giants lyrical atrocity that was "Little James". Almost... What is true is that, despite those bullish pre-match interviews, their sixth record is the least confident and most fragile Oasis album so far – something that it would be easy to suggest reflects the circumstances surrounding its creation. In fact, if we didn’t know better we might say that losing the Biggest Band In Britain mantle to Coldplay (whose album is released a week after this), that complacent Glastonbury show and the three weeks of aborted sessions with original producers Death In Vegas have left ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ with a quality that could almost be mistaken for – surely not! – humility.

Versions

Liam Gallagher also had a larger impact on the album through his developing songwriting. Noel has said that the album is his favourite of Oasis' last four, because all members contributed to it. This, he claims, has given it a different feel from a typically Noel-written Oasis album.
