Lenses can suffer from all kinds of problems – from de-centering of lens elements and focus accuracy issues, all the way to poor construction practices, which can go undetected during the quality assurance process. As seen above, the lens features a total of four switches on the side of the lens. From top to bottom, there is a focus mode switch that allows switching from autofocus with manual focus override to manual focus, focus limiter switch that goes from close focus to infinity (full range) and 6 meters to infinity, vibration reduction (VR) switch and lastly, vibration reduction mode switch that allows switching between Normal and Sport mode. If you want to shot at other than f/5.6, the "E" electronic diaphragm only works on cameras introduced since 2007. These cameras are the D4, D4s, D3, D3s, D3P, D3x, Df, D810, D800/e, D750, D700, D610, D600, D300, D300s, D7000, D7100, D7200, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3300, D3200, D3100 and newer. Auto Focus: AF-S with SWM (silent wave motor), so it does work on D3x00/5×00-bodies. Manual-focus override is by simply turning the focus ring. Same with the competition. [+] The good news is that it's not that heavy; it's easy to hand-hold and shoot. The superb vibration reduction makes it trivial to shoot hand-held in any light hand-held. I do a lot of photography from kayaks. In that case, I find the smaller size and weight of the 80-400 is desirable, although after I got the 500 mm PF I started using it in my kayak rather than the 80-400. I got both the Nikon D500 and the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 in 2017, and they have worked without a single issue since then. The all-metal Canon 100-400 focuses closer than any pro 70-200mm lens (just 2¾' or 0.84m), so it replaces all 70-200mm lenses as well. To help my 200-500mm lens survive the hardships of life, I dressed it in a protective neoprene LensCoat right from the start. While this won’t provide protection against rain, it works reliably against dirt, scratches, and minor bumps. Beneath its clothes, the lens looks pristine despite years of use.

I’m not denying that the fixed glass is sharper – it is, especially in the corners. But keep in mind what camera I’ve been talking about this whole time! The D500 is a crop-sensor camera, so you’re cropping out the “corner” performance of the lens anyway, and only using the sharper center. (Even on a full-frame camera, the corners of most wildlife photos are out-of-focus or unimportant anyway, so a bit of sharpness loss is hardly a big deal.) More compact in both size and weight, it covers a much more extended and versatile range, especially if you are shooting some animalscape or telephoto landscape shots. In addition, it is easier to carry and maneuver, (making it easier for you, the photographer, to be mobile) but loses out in absolute reach. It is a great one lens solution for a long hike, or other excursion/trip where photography is not the primary objective, but if an opportunity presents itself you still want to have top quality gear.In one aspect of the autofocus, the Nikon D500 even beats the Nikon D5: the amount of the viewfinder that’s covered by focus points. On full-frame DSLRs like the Nikon D5, the AF points are usually bunched together in the center. On the other hand, APS-C cameras like the D500 cut out much of the empty space along the edges, giving you an AF system that can follow subjects almost anywhere in the frame. The Nikon 200-500’s zoom range provides flexibility to shoot several compositions. This proves especially useful in situations where movement is limited, such as when working from a hide or with subjects that are sensitive to movement. Sigma offers a lot of lenses in this category: Their latest is the 150-600mm F5-6,3 DG OS HSM Contemporary (1100 EUR, review coming soon), then there is the 150-600mm F5-6,3 DG OS HSM Sports (around 1600 EUR, see Gordon’s Sigma 150-600mm Sport review). Plus the 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM (around 700 EUR, see my Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 review) and the 50-500mm 4.5-6.3 DG APO OS HSM which has the largest zoom-range of all alternatives and goes for around 1000 EUR. It may not look big by itself, but notice how small is the lens mount in all these photos. Put it on a camera, and you'll see how big it is: Of course it won't autofocus on manual-focus 35mm cameras, and VR won't work on some of the oldest 35mm cameras either —but that's the case with all lenses on these cameras.The 200-500mm’s lens length of 267.5mm (10.5 inches) and weight of 2.3 kg (5.1 pounds) can’t be described as feather-light. But compared to some exotic super-telephotos, it’s not so bad. My favorite Nikon 400mm f/2.8G VR weighs 4.6 kg (10.2 pounds). That’s literally twice as much! Eucalyptus, 29 October 2015.
