About this deal

Contrary to popular belief, even the longest-lasting MRE with really long shelf life will typically only last 5 years at most, assuming optimal conditions and a new meal. You can push this number if you’re feeling risky (or desperate), but it’s not advised. Chivers, C.G (November 18, 2019). "Thanksgiving At War: 2001-2019". The New York Times . Retrieved December 7, 2019. I always tell forward thinking folks to not forget their pets when it comes to food and water. My big dog if he plays a couple times a day can consume 3/4 gallon in one 24 hour period.

Andrew Craig. "What Comes in an MRE? (Detailed Report with 10 Examples)". Easy MRE. Archived from the original on June 17, 2020 . Retrieved June 16, 2020.Most recently, MREs have been developed using the Dietary Reference Intake, created by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The IOM indicated service members (who were classified as highly active men between the ages of 18 and 30) typically burn about 4,200 Calories (kcal) a day, but tended to only consume about 2,400 Calories a day during combat, entering a negative energy balance. This imbalance occurs when service members fail to consume full portions of their rations. [10] Although manipulations to the food items and distribution of macronutrients to help boost the amount of kilocalories per MRE have been made, more studies are showing many service members still do not meet today's standards of daily consumption, often trading and discarding portions of the ration. [11] Researchers continue to study the habits and eating preferences of service members, making constant changes that encourage service members to eat the entire meal and thus get full nutritional value. [11] A small randomized controlled trial from 2017 confirms the nutritonal balance of MRE eaten-in-whole using blood tests. [12]

I recommend these suppliers because they store them correctly, which means they’ll have years of shelf life remaining.MREs were designed to supply the body with essential nutrients and calories to keep going. You can eat MREs for a very long period of time and stay healthy. Had to giggle, but no sane person is going to care about a dash of MSG that's been cleared by the FDA for decades, or any other "healthy eating" guidelines under a SHTF situ. Can't fight, build, plant, heal or repair on an empty stomach. You'd want high fat with protein. In a forced SHTF you would need energy to attend to a whole new list of work items every day to survive. I would advise some Wally World Equate hi-potency multi-vitamins/minerals, and are better than nothing despite their iffy absorption and value. Pain meds too. Only thing to prevent consuming some MSG should be if you have a known problem or reaction to it, and very few do. In a real SHTF unless the reactions were nasty, I'm eating. After repeated experiences with providing prepared rations to soldiers dating from before World War II, Pentagon officials ultimately realized that simply providing a nutritionally balanced meal in the field was not adequate. Service members in various geographic regions and combat situations often required different subsets of ingredients for food to be considered palatable over long periods. Catering to individual tastes and preferences would encourage service members to actually consume the whole ration and its nutrition. Most importantly, the use of specialized forces in extreme environments and the necessity of carrying increasingly heavy field loads while on foot during long missions required significantly lighter alternatives to standard canned wet rations. Each MRE weighs 510 to 740 grams (18 to 26oz), depending on the menu. [11] Since MREs contain water, they weigh more than freeze-dried meals providing equivalent calories. Simply tear the top of the heating sleeve and slip your MRE inside it. Then add a minimal amount of water to initiate the reaction.

Truthfully, I’m a bit of a health nut. Because of this I’m very leery of putting a bunch of funky stuff into my system. There were occasions with some of Army Surplus MRE meals that I wasn’t able to get the food warm enough despite the recommended amount of water and cook time. All of the ingredient lists are short and pronounceable. Even better, there’s nothing strange added to the meals. Burgess, Lisa (March 16, 2008). "MRES: it could be worse (and it was)". Stars and Stripes . Retrieved March 27, 2021.

The Modular Operational Rations Enhancement (MORE) is issued as a supplement to meals for troops in extreme, demanding operational environments such as high-intensity training events. [53] [54] Failing to do this will result in a slew of potential GI issues such as diarrhea, constipation, and even vomiting. These are all things that will actively hurt your ability to survive, so you need to take precautionary measures seriously. Heating Them Up My wife was a huge fan of the included pop-tart, though, and Tootsie Rolls are always winners. So, there’s that, I suppose. If you’re prepping but are concerned about the health value of the food that you’re storing, I recommend Legacy Premium products.Given that morale and mindset are a huge part of making it through any disaster in one piece, we feel this is a further reason for recommending Augason Farm products.
