About this deal

There is no darkness to be found between the void of stars, nor the deepest pits of the earth that equals the darkness of Mankind’s deeds.“—Excerpt from the suppressedNeo-Terran Credos Exalted Sorcerer • Sorcerer • Warpsmith • Dark Apostle • Master of Possession • Master of Executions • Lord Discordant • Warsmith • Death Guard Sorcerer • Lord of Contagion • Malignant Plaguecaster • Plague Surgeon • Tallyman • Scarab Occult Sorcerer • Scarab Occult Terminators

Unlike many legions, the pre-Heresy Death Guard shunned psykers wherever possible due to Mortarion’s distaste of anything tainted by the Warp. In addition, Mortarion was isolated from his fellow Primarchs, befriending only Horus Lupercal himself and Konrad Curze, the Night Haunter. Though close to Horus, Mortarion was not the first to join the heresy – and nearly did not side with his insurrectionist brothers at all. On the way to Terra to begin the final assault of the Horus Heresy, the Death Guard fleet became lost in the Warp. During this time, a plague swept through the Death Guard, slowly twisting them into mutants and threatening to torture them all for eternity unless they openly embraced the dark powers of Chaos. Condemned to a deathless state of decay, the Death Guard would spread their pestilent diseases the length and breadth of the galaxy for the greater glory of Chaos. Mortarion was pleased when the Emperor ruled that sorcery was to be forbidden and even the Space Marine Legions' Librarius divisions would be disbanded, the Librarians returned to the ranks of the line Astartes and sworn to never use their powers again. Mortarion is one of those rare Warhammer Primarchs that has three tabletop models. The first is a Forge World exclusive for use in Horus Heresy 30k battles, showing the Primarch before he fell to Chaos and became a bit daemon-y. The second is a shrouded death-like figure designed for the Epic game system, dating from 1992. To this day, Mortarion's Death Guard launch their assaults through the Cadian Gate and into the galaxy beyond, sometimes in large bodies and at others lending strength to allied forces. Wherever they travel they spread the joyful, exuberant poxes of Nurgle, gifting those who would know eternal life with the choicest of the Plague God's blessings. For the defending player, deploying strategically against Mortarion is key. There’s no avoiding him getting into combat with your units – you’ll need to decide which ones it will be. Try to keep single-model units like Dreadnoughts away from him. Terminators with storm shields, or any other unit with high invulnerable saves, is the best to hold him in place with – don’t try to confront him directly with your own Lords of War or bog him down with infantry (unless they’re cheap enough that losing 18 isn’t going to devastate your plans!) Together, the Ynnari and their newfound Imperial allies forged a path through their foes and the Webway to Ultramar. Upon Macragge, the Chapter homeworld of the Ultramarines, a miracle was wrought within the Fortress of Hera through the technological prowess of Belisarius Cawl and the power of Ynnead as embodied in his priestess Yvraine, the Daughter of Shade. Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines who had been trapped for 10,000 standard years in stasis, was restored to the realm of Mankind. Unlike the other speakers at Nikaea who stood against the use of psychic powers and who mostly harangued Magnus and reviled the Thousand Sons but brought little proof or argument to the debate, Mortarion's intervention was short, impersonal and to the point. Though that offensive was eventually defeated– forcing Mortarion to face the displeasure of Grandfather Nurgle– the Death Lordlives on, forever plotting, on behalf of his Chaos God patron, to bring the Imperium to ruin.

He was given command of the Death Guard Space Marine Legion on the arrival of the Emperor to his homeworld of Barbarus, but he turned to the service of Chaos during the Horus Heresy. At present, Mortarion is the greatest Daemon Prince of Nurgle and the Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard Chaos Space Marines. Gathering the hardiest of his rebel fighters, Mortarion trained and equipped them further, turning them into living weapons for the final challenge. Armed with respirators that would help them survive, he led his newly-named Death Guard to victory over the majority of the Xenos slavers.Nurgle responded gleefully and took the XIV Legion and Mortarion for his own champions. As Mortarion at last swore his soul to the eternal service of the Plague God in return for an end to the ceaseless agony, Nurgle responded with his usual generosity. Mortarion was transformed into a Daemon Prince of the Plaguefather, the living embodiment of life in death, and death in life. The Death Lord at last was worthy of his title. Defile EVERYTHING: Mortarion, Epidemius, a Herald of Nurgle and as many Defilers as you can fit in. As both Nurgle Daemons and Death Guard, Defilers benefit from Epidemius’ Tally of Pestilence, Daemon Psychic powers and Mortarion’s Primarch of the Death Guard ability! Finding this stranger in conference with the village elders, Mortarion claimed that his people needed no outside help. The stranger commented that even Mortarion and his Death Guard were having trouble pacifying the final warlord, and offered a challenge. If Mortarion could defeat the High Overlord Necare, the stranger would leave. If not, Mortarion had to swear fealty to the stranger and the Imperium of Man he represented. Though the Imperium now faced its darkest hour, all was not lost. A valiant band known as the Ynnari, a mixed faction of Aeldari and Drukhari in service to their awakened God of the Dead Ynnead, followed a radical path that they believed would see Chaos defeated and the Aeldari race resurgent. Compelled by fate or circumstance, the Ynnari lent their aid to Archmagos Belisarius Cawl, Saint Celestine and Inquisitor Katarinya Greyfax and rescued them from the forces of Abaddon on Klaisus, the ice moon of Kasr Holn after the fall of Cadia. The final result is pretty solid, and I’m still happy with it more than two years later. It’s detailed enough to be impressive while not requiring a massive investment of time and energy that some freehand approaches can take. The ‘Ardcoat here also helped ensure they’ve kept paint.
