Barry Windsor-Smith’s Monsters (Fantagraphics), an epic, gorgeously illustrated work of horror, social trauma, and violence, was named Best New Graphic Novel during the 2022 Will Eisner Comic Awards ceremony, presented as an in-person event for the first time in three years at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, held July 21-24.

When I ask, Windsor-Smith declines to comment on that aspect of the book’s genealogy, but says: “Each layer, each tendril of the story presented itself as a means to substantiate that which had gone before. But as I was working in a similar nonlinear process as the story itself, it was often the case that I couldn’t place which came first and what came last. Cause and effect is present in the finished work but sorting it out as the story went along was a complex puzzle.” The Drifter: Logan starts the series having recently been discharged from the military. His basic pattern includes going from town-to-town, getting into drunken fights, and eventually moving on. Super-Soldier: The purpose of Experiment X is implied to be trying to create one, but the focus is more on Logan's ability to kill rather than any other military application. It took me days to finish this, but not due to any lagging or slogging dullness... on the contrary, I had to force myself to put it down periodically for my own emotional wellbeing. This is a mentally and emotionally exhausting read. Parts of it are also terrifying. Not in a creepy, spooky way... in a very real horror of life sort of way. It’s frightening in the same way an angry adult about to lose their temper was scary to me as a child. It’s a mostly joyless read.Barry Winsdsor-Smith discussed his July 1984 pitch for a Hulk one-shot story with Comic Book Artist... I recommend this to everyone, but with a massive CW. This is triggering shit. My recommendation is because I believe it’s important literature, and a someday iconic classic of our time. It’s an example of just how serious, mature and transcendental a comic book can be. I think it made me a better and wiser person. Windsor-Smith continues to note that he felt that the issue was important enough that he was going to do what he could to make sure the story could run as a single issue of Incredible Hulk – withOUT Comic Code Approval…
