There is a removable insole that adds 3.5mm of insulation to the soles of the shoes. The outlast thermal regulator insole also features reflective foil to keep your toes warmer during the cooler months. In fact, the insole technology apparently provides 3 times more warmth than regular insoles! Toe box An important thing to note is that the Magna is not 100% waterproof. Vivobarefoot state that the shoes are “made using waterproof technology or water resistant treatment uppers with hi-tech seal.” On test, the Magnas coped well in light rain for short periods of time, but were unable to keep water out in long, wet grass, puddles, and sustained periods of heavy rain. The shoes are perhaps best suited to summer walking when conditions are more predictably dry. The laces are slightly crimped/curly. This helps them stay well done up and makes them easy to adjust. The lacing system also features metal eyelets at the ankle and tough plastic eyelets further down. Ankle I really love the materials. They are functional, designed to take a beating and still look good. The shoe is made from naturally scarred leather from free-roaming cattle sourced from small-scale farmers (so not vegan friendly) with a water-resistant treatment so you can use them cross country without getting your feet wet.

Verdict

The Magna FG is one of Vivobarefoot’s mid-weight options, branded as a shoe “that will take you from city to summit.” As a relative novice to barefoot-style shoes, I was keen to give the Magnas a good test, so wore them almost continuously for several weeks, from the hard pavements of the city to the uneven trails of the countryside. It is also highly water resistant (pretty close to fully waterproof), and is highly durable.

I also found that the fabric across the tops of my feet (where my toes bend) is very rigid. The result is that when I walk, a stiff seam is created here that pushes into the tops of my feet. This may not be much of an issue for most wearers, however, I have an uncomfortable scar on my foot, right where the shoes crease! Up on the grassy moorland this is no problem at all.
