I have read Sleepyhead, Scaredy Cat, Lazybones, Time of Death. Billingham became the first crime writer to win the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award twice when his novel Death Message won in 2009, [10] against Reginald Hill, Val McDermid, Ian Rankin and Lee Child. If a series like Billingham's is to be successful, i.e., long-running, the author must come up with interesting cases, or at least a spin on a case that does not seem too familiar to readers of crime fiction; Billingham is a master at this. In an earlier book, homeless men are being murdered in a seemingly serial killer fashion, andThorne goes undercover, living for months on the street. He doesn't just act the part, though, he becomes homeless. Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival.

The book is dedicated to the memory of Banaz Mahmod and Rahmat Sulemani, and in his “Author’s Note” Billingham provides valuable information about honor-based violence in the UK, and the tragic true story of Banaz and Rahmat. What’s a little hard to believe is that Tanner isn’t given more police protection from the start, considering how and why her girlfriend was murdered. The major twist in the plot is a little too easy to foresee as well. And then Thorne decides to play judge, jury and executioner himself in the most pathetic and unbelievable confession.From an early age, Billingham wrote often "funny" stories for popularity and enjoyment.
