What follows are examples of sculptors who may have been homosexual and sculptures of renowned, possibly queer, women – some arguably more explicit in their identity than others. Bloodlust and lesbians — what could be a more winning combination? In honor of Halloween month, the programmers at New York arthouse cinema The Quad are showcasing 12 staples of the lesbian vampire genre, because who doesn’t love a broad with bite? Titled “ A Woman’s Bite: Cinema’s Sapphic Vampires,” the series also complements an excellent Jean Rollin retrospective, Très Outré: The Sinister Visions of Jean Rollin, the French horror auteur who put women at the center of his lush, gothic cinema. “A Woman’s Bite” runs October 26-November 1 at The Quad. Although some of the fascinating women pictured are understood to be lesbian couples, in some cases there is little information about their sexual orientation - nonetheless it is quite extraordinary that these images survive as many old photos of same-sex couples are believed to have been destroyed by family members.

Similarly to how we view say two detectives on, Line Of Duty, or superhero characters brushing hands, when you watch pre-Code movies, you have to read between the lines to get some sweet ass LGBT content. For example, in Mille (1931), Joan Blondell and Lilyan Tashman have often been presumed lesbians in their supporting best friend roles to Helen Twelvetree’s titular role. They share a bed, they do everything together, and have a natural ease with one another. However, plenty of women of the time – thanks to the depression – shared flats and mattresses to have somewhere comfy and warm to sleep.
