Another quality of the Aqua Guard is you can apply generous coats and not experience much in the way of sagging or runs. Again, this is normally an issue when using water-based. A water-based paint is not as durable, opacity isn’t as good meaning extra coats are needed, it is harder to control when applying and you normally encounter brush marks.

Don’t get me wrong, if you do not qualify for a trade discount then it is almost certainly cheaper to buy Johnstone’s Trade paint online, but the physical stores are an industry gem. Johnstone’s is a good, old-fashioned brand, and JDCs reflect that. They don’t try to be uber modern, but they have everything you could possibly need, and the dedicated staff will guide you through your choices for any given decorating project.
Aqua” means water, and the tin boasts “water-based technology”, but in fact, the Johnstone’s Aqua satin and gloss are both hybrids. This means, although the paint is primarily water-based, it contains an alkyd (or oil) carrier, so it’s a mix of water and oil!! They do this for a few reasons, water-based paints do solve a lot of problems, but they create some new ones. I’ll give you some examples; The downside of being a hybrid is that it can ruin your brushes if you’re using the paint for a prolonged period. To combat this, you should keep your brushes wet by swilling them out every hour or so. Running a damp cloth over a surface before you paint it will also help with flow. Johnstone’s Aqua Guard is a fully water-based satinwood, meaning it will never discolour over time. Visible brush strokes – well, there are some (I was using a prodec x7 if that helps), but only if you stare closely at it. In fact, it made me look at my oil-based finish and to be honest, it’s pretty much the same. Maybe a better brush and person could get it looking perfect. As for the paintbrush, I use the Purdy Elite Monarch XL. It holds loads of paint, is soft enough to lay-off, and will keep its shape well. Available online. Besides which, the Johnstone’s Aqua undercoat is brilliant!! Easy to apply, dries flat and has great opacity. It is one of the best “nearly water-based” undercoats on the market. Rub down previously painted surfaces with fine waterproof abrasive paper and rinse thoroughly. Avoid the inhalation of dust. Wear a suitable face mask if dry sanding.

This isn’t down to the paint being poor quality, but more to do with the decorator not knowing how to apply the product correctly.
The normal procedure would be one coat of undercoat followed by two topcoats, whether going over previously painted or pre-primed. Three coat systems over previously painted surfaces are the norm for most water-based paints. There are a few products out there which only need two. PPG (Johnstone’s) constantly redevelop their paint, releasing 4 new, or vastly improved products every year. Where I think they fall short is their marketing. People simply do not know about their paint. This may explain why Johnstone’s are a favourite amongst decorators, but not so much with homeowners. The key products in Johnstone Trade’s arsenal for me are the Aqua Guard, which really is way ahead of anything Dulux and Crown have to offer, and Johnstone’s StainAway, which is like nothing else on the market.
