About this deal

Good wand, that one. But I suppose they snapped it in half when you got expelled." said Mr. Ollivander, suddenly stern. Hagrid also knew and greatly admired Alastor Moody, and Moody's protege, Nymphadora Tonks. They fought together in several battles, including the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and the Battle of the Seven Potters, where Hagrid was devastated by Moody's death. Tonks later married Remus Lupin, and their son, Teddy, would attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after both his parents were killed at the Battle of Hogwarts.

During the 1994–1995 school year, the Triwizard Tournament was held at Hogwarts. Students from the Durmstrang Institute and the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic attended Hogwarts starting in October, and Hagrid was tasked with taking care of the Beauxbatons' Abraxans, which drank only single malt whiskey and required forceful handling. Over the course of the year, he performed various tasks essential to the workings of the tournament: in November, he helped Charles Weasley take care of the dragons used in the First Task of the tournament, which he showed Harry at the suggestion of Professor Moody (who was really Barty Crouch Jnr); he also bred Blast-Ended Skrewts as a project for his fourth years, which were to be used in the Third task of the tournament. [29] Hagrid only made it halfway through his wizarding education. During his third year, the Chamber of Secrets was opened, leading to the death of Myrtle Warren, a Ravenclaw student who spent her afterlife haunting a bathroom as "Moaning Myrtle." It was around this time that Hagrid obtained Aragog, a large magical spider known as an Acromantula. When Harry and Ron meet Aragog in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," the spider describes how he came to be with the half-giant student. "A traveler gave me to Hagrid when I was an egg," he shares. "Hagrid was only a boy, but he cared for me." In fact, one could even argue that by putting the broken pieces of his wand in there, Hagrid has effectively crafted himself a new wand - after all, wands are composed of a magical core surrounded by by a wooden body, and by putting the magical core of his broken wand in the wooden stem of his umbrella Hagrid may have accidentally made something that is significantly more effective than a broken wand, yet not quite as powerful as a "real" wand. About halfway through the school year, Hagrid returned from his mission for Dumbledore with his half-brother, Grawp. In 1995, Dolores Umbridge was brought in as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, and later became the first and only Hogwarts High Inquisitor. Hagrid barely excused himself for his long absence from Umbridge's tyrannical questioning and was surprised that he would be subjected to her inspection soon afterwards. The Rubeus Hagrid wand, hidden inside his pink umbrella, is beautifully replicated and comes complete with a collector’s box.Key Features:• A TRUE REPLICA - The Hagrids Umbrella Wand with collectors box is a meticulous recreation of the wand prop used in the Harry Potter film series, crafted with high quality materials. Every wand is hand painted to provide the most realistic experience. The wand also works as a fully functional umbrella. The professor with whom Hagrid had the most difficult and antagonistic relationship was, by far, Dolores Umbridge, who was a pure-blood supremacist with a particular dislike for what she called " half-breeds." Throughout the 1995–1996 school year, she made Hagrid's life miserable with her disruptive evaluations of his teaching (part of her role as Hogwarts High Inquisitor, during which she was unabashedly condescending and critical.)

Despite this, Hagrid was a very sensitive person and was known to burst into tears when someone close to him was harmed or killed, or when he felt responsible for something that put his friends in peril, such as drunkenly telling Quirinus Quirrell how to get past his giant three headed dog, Fluffy. [39] We have heard within the last few hours, that Rubeus Hagrid, well known gamekeeper at Hogwarts School, has narrowly escaped arrest in the grounds of Hogwarts, where he has rumoured to have hosted a Support Harry Potter party, in his house. However, Hagrid was not taken into custody, and is, we believe, on the run." — Potterwatch regarding Hagrid's escape [src]

Hagrid is allergic to cats

Unfortunately, after his expulsion from Hogwarts in his third year, Hagrid's wand was broken. And, we think he’d prefer it if we kept away any mention of his pink umbrella... He was a Gryffindor Hagrid always stoutly defended Severus Snape against Harry's doubts and allegations, on the basis that Albus Dumbledore trusted Snape completely. When Snape killed Dumbledore, Hagrid initially disbelieved the fact and told Harry he must be mistaken but was later furious to learn that Snape had indeed killed the late Headmaster. Hagrid openly opposed Snape when he became the Headmaster of Hogwarts by holding a Support Harry Potter party (unaware Snape was secretly still on their side), an act which almost resulted in his arrest and forced him to go into hiding until the final battle. Before Hagrid fled, Snape put students in detentions with Hagrid, ensuring that they were protected from the harsher and torturous punishments from the Carrows. However, Hagrid eventually learned of Snape's true loyalties during the final confrontation of the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry and Voldemort's wands are considered "brothers" even though they are different woods. According to the author, Harry's wand is holly, a wood traditionally believed to repel evil. Voldemort's wand is yew, a long-lived tree representing death and resurrection. What bonds them are their identical magical cores: Phoenix tail feathers. A Phoenix is a mythical bird that repeatedly dies by bursting into flames and then is reborn from its ashes. Harry will learn that the particular Phoenix who donated only these two feathers is Fawkes, Dumbledore's animal familiar. Fawkes saves Harry's life in the next book and heals his wound in book 4. The provenance of the magical core within his wand becomes vitally important in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I think there is enough evidence in the canon suggesting that a broken wand is not functional. Hagrid's wand does seem to malfunction. But considering Hagrid is an unqualified wizard (who had at the most 3 years of magical education) who probably wasn't a very powerful wizard in the first place (I would imagine him to have been somewhat like Neville, passionate and good-hearted but magically untalented), I think his poor magic should be attributed to his abilities rather than his wand. It isn't until "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" that it's revealed Hagrid isn't a giant: He's a half-giant. When Ron and Harry are walking on the castle grounds during the Yule Ball, they stumble upon Hagrid speaking with Madame Olympe Maxime, the headmistress of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. He believes she is a half-giant, and asks her about it, inadvertently offending her.If anyone wanted ter find out some stuff, all they'd have ter do would be ter follow the spiders. That'd lead 'em right. That's all I'm sayin'." — Hagrid cryptically telling Harry and Ron how to uncover the truth [src] Hagrid is the archaic past participle of the verb "hagride", [46] which means "harass or torment with dread or nightmares", and its etymology in turn is " hag" and "ride". [47] A hag is a nightmare spirit in English folklore. According to folklore, the Hag sat on a sleeper's chest and sent nightmares to him or her. When the subject awoke, he or she would be unable to breathe or even move for a short period of time. This state is now called sleep paralysis, but in the old belief the subject had been "hagridden". [48] Grawp stayed with Hagrid until winter, during which he caused some disturbance at the school. Hagrid arrived in time when some students, who didn't know who Grawp was, were beginning to fight Grawp, and properly introduced him to them. Around Christmas, Hagrid wanted to give Grawp a present, and talked about what to choose with the unidentified Muggle-born student. They inspired Hagrid to come up with the idea of taking a picture with Grawp, so Hagrid went and got a camera, possibly from Argus Filch. [33] He had trouble getting it to work, though, so he summoned the student again to let them help him with it. The three eventually took the picture together. [32]
