About this deal

Although this is a wonderful experience to give your students, it can take a bit of time and effort to set up. Here are four tips to make things run more smoothly! Start with the first step and go slowly with the video and before you'll know it you will be a master in gelli printing and you won't even remember what you were uncomfortable about... Keep play and experiment beyond the basics of gelli printing and try new found objects to create textures, try new color combination and use DIY stencils or stamps to create even more amazing gelli prints. A: Wiping your plate with baby oil should remove most pigment stains. After you've cleaned the plate, you should wash it with a dish soap, such as Dawn, to remove the oily residue. Many crafters and art journalers like gelli plate printing as an additional technique to their work. I discovered the technique when I was trying to introduce printmaking to third graders. I really liked the flexibility and the layering options, especially in conjunction with the other techniques I enjoy. Although it may seem like a simple technique, you can get complex work with it. HOMEMADE VS STORE BOUGHT GELLI PLATES The gel printing plate is made of a unique plastic that contains mineral oil. The gel plate will leak a small amount of harmless mineral oil when left sitting on an absorbent surface.

Q: I noticed there are bubbles under the plastic sheets that cover the Gelli® plate. Is that a problem? A: The Gelli® plate can be cut with scissors. Do not try to cut it with a craft knife. The flexible, stretchy nature of the plate makes it very difficult to cut with a knife. Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates are made of a unique plastic that contains mineral oil. Small amounts of this harmless oil will leach out when plates are left so it is recommended to protect your worksurface by placing your gel printing plate on a smooth, flat, non-porous barrier such as a Teflon sheet, baking tray or piece of glass. There is no latex in the gel plate, and it does not contain any animal products. As the gel plate is used it is normal for it to lose its gloss finish and become matt and cloudy. This does not affect its performance.

If you run a choice-based classroom, you can have all students do Gelli plate monoprinting as a skill building activity in rotations. Then, during the following class, you can do a mini-lesson about how to turn the print into a mixed-media piece. Bamboo Rayon: I really liked the way my image was really clear on this fabric; I was not sure about the rayon blend and it was really thin as well

Cut figures or magazine pictures. Tissue paper, dried flowers or leaves, or feathers. Basically, anything you use as a material to create a texture, you can also use unpainted as collage material. Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates are ideally suited for the production of colourful and unique monotypes (also called monoprints). Acrylic paints are best, although water-soluble printmaking inks and fabric paints are also ideal.Gel printing plates look and feel like gelatin. They are durable, reusable and can be stored at room temperature. Easy to clean and always ready for printing. The first step is to apply some paint to the gel plate. You can do this with a palette knife or just dab a few drops of paint onto the plate’s surface straight from the bottle. You can apply more than one color. There are loads of ways to use Gelli Plates to make prints. Here is one way we used our 8″x10″ plate to make a print. Gel plates come in different sizes and shapes. As a beginner I recommend starting with an 8.5" x 11" plate. This plate is large enough to experiment on and use other pattern making tools like stencils and stamps. If you want to start smaller you can always use a part of the plate with a smaller paper. However if you use a small gelli plate and want to make a larger print you'll be limited by the size.

First of all it's reverse and second you build layers that you don't know how will look together once you are finished.

Gel Printing Plates are simple tools to use, and you can use them with all different kinds of media. The creative possibilities really are endless! Read on to find out more about monoprinting with a Gel Plate, or follow the links below to navigate to a particular topic. There are a few different manufacturers which make Gel Plates, the two leading companies being Gelli Arts and Gel Press. There are lots of books out there on Gelli Plate Printing – This one has to be one of our favourites: Gelli Plate Printing: Mixed-Media Monoprinting Without a Press by Joan Bess. Although I have a room full of craft supplies I never seem to have the paper I need. I'm a control freak so I like to match my papers to the theme, mood, colors and basically everything. We all know our students may need a little push in the inspiration department from time to time. Give your students an opportunity to brainstorm ideas of what they would like to create with their print or inspire them with the ideas listed below.
