California uses a total loss formula that says a vehicle is totaled when it’s “uneconomical to repair.” As you can imagine, all the food bits ending up in the gap will go bad. Gap insurance is optional car insurance coverage that helps bridge the financial gap for drivers whose car loan balance is more than what their vehicle is worth if it’s totaled. How Does Gap Insurance Work?

If your finance settlement (the amount you've borrowed) is higher than the cost of your car, the extra sum is referred to as 'negative equity'. No matter your choice, these gap caps are very easy to install. Simply measure the length and cut the T-shaped strip to size. Place it in the gap, and that’s it. While you don’t have to glue gap caps down (for easier removal when you want to clean or replace them), you can add a bead of silicone underneath for a more permanent installation. Alternatively, you could opt for a magnetic stove gap filler. 3. Rubber Gap Filler Strips Your policy should be acquired within a year of purchasing your car. However, some providers allow you to postpone your coverage to the second year, letting you lean on the new car replacement benefit for the first year. An insurance company can declare a vehicle is a total loss when repairs exceed 80% of its value. State law says a vehicle must be totaled when repairs exceed 100% of value. Some car insurance companies, such as Horace Mann and Liberty Mutual, offer “better car replacement” coverage. This reimburses you for a newer or better model of your totaled car. This coverage may also have mileage parameters. For example, Liberty Mutual will reimburse you for a vehicle that’s one model year newer and with 15,000 fewer miles than the vehicle that was totaled.If you're considering this, bear in mind that new car replacement cover is subject to conditions and doesn't fully replicate the protection of Gap insurance. In some scenarios you could still potentially face a cash shortfall.
