About this deal

If you’re looking for a way to extend your home out into your patio, and vice versa, then the traditional French door has a great deal to offer. They make a fantastic addition to the modern home and garden, neatly bridging the two and creating a single, cohesive space. French doors were first developed to allow French aristocrats to look out onto their estates, and to allow natural light to permeate the interior. Both virtues also apply to the modern French door, too.

Armed with my new thermal imaging camera I start to photograph things that feel cold. I am not short of subjects. For variety I photograph the dogs. They were certainly warm, especially next to the radiator. After a brief doggy interlude I return to the serious issue of photographing the problematic French doors. French Door Thermal Image The best thing about this was that there was a simple way of remedying the problem; take up the slabs under the doors sills, seal properly and reinstate the paving slabs; far easier than removing doors and having to make good internal decoration. The pictures of the French doors in the kitchen told a similar story to the lounge with a cold area around the door threshold. Apologies for the poor illumination of the right hand picture. When taking thermal images you tend to forget that it records both a thermal and a normal image; I didn’t ensure the light levels were sufficient for a standard picture. At least the triple glazed windows are showing a decent temperature of 18°C so we are not losing too much through the glass. Aluminium Sliding Patio Doors There are multiple products to choose from when shopping for window insulation kits, but how do you decide which model is suitable for the windows in your home? The purpose for which you’re considering buying a plastic film windows insulation may vary from wanting to keep the heat from escaping via a poorly insulated window to escaping draft to keeping the temperature constant in a room where air conditioning is used. No matter the reason for which you’re looking for an insulation kit, our buying guide will help make the right choice. We also offer colour and material options for the screening material, including beige, brown and white, with standard fiberglass or optional aluminum screen mesh. To figure out the best product for your home’s interior and exterior style, our expert installers can help you choose the best colour, style and materials for a new door and screen combination. We’ll also do the measuring to ensure a perfect fit! This means that it won't be as drafty during the colder months or as hot as it could be during the summer months when the sunlight enters the room. It also means that your doors will be protected against damage from the weather, wildlife, and common pests. You can buy this sealant by the can and easily apply it to the door frame without it being visible. To apply it, first, place your hand in various areas around the door to see where cold drafts are entering. The field provides a protective layer that will prevent the window from shattering in the event it gets smashed Look at the edges of your door, and you’ll see strips of weather-stripping. This is designed to compress when the door is closed, and form a tight seal that’ll keep draughts at bay. Door seals tend to come in the form of either brushes or lengths of rubber. To replace your weather-stripping, it’s best to first remove the old strips and take them down to your local hardware shop. That will make it easy to find a like-for-like replacement. 2. Draught excluders

To move freely, a door needs to be very slightly smaller than the opening that it is in - the difference is a matter of millimetres - but it does make a difference! Air, of course, can flow through the smallest of gaps, and this means that your external doors are a common source of heat loss, especially in the winter when it’s windy and the external air temperature differs greatly from the internal temperature. With French doors letting in cold air during winter, and hot air in summer, your attempts to heat or air-condition your home can prove inefficient and expensive. External French doors are generally made from wood or UPVC. Wooden French doors are longer-lasting if they are cared for properly, because they can be re-painted and stained to keep them looking in perfect condition, and they can be treated to weatherproof them. UPVC doors are more likely to discolour over time, and it’s harder to give them a fresh lease of life when that happens. Before we explain the sequence of operation, it is useful to understand the anatomy of a French Door: If you're unfamiliar with how to unmount and remount your door, refer to the manufacturer's manual. You can also consider hiring a professional to handle door insulation for you. Finally, DIY-minded homeowners should know that foam filling is only intended for use with hollow doors. 4. Use Foam Insulation SheetsDrill holes in the top, sides, and bottom of your door. Each hole needs to be large enough to fit a straw-sized tube. If your location is prone to extreme temperatures, ensure optimal energy efficiency by choosing French doors with argon gas-filled panes and a low U-factor measurement.

Q: My doors don’t open and close properly. Can I still install the French Door Draught Proofing kit? The most popular measure of energy efficiency in your home is the U-value. This describes how effective a material is as an insulator. The lower the value, the less heat is able to pass through a given area of material in a given amount of time. It’s typically measured in watts per metre squared. A standard double-glazed window will have a U-value of just under three. Be sure to use double-sided tape around the edges. It's also helpful to first measure the door and then cut the plastic down to size so that you won't cut more than needed. You can also remove any wrinkles using a hair blow dryer. As the first salvo in the war was fired, out came the rugs to avoid cold feet as we ponder our strategy to defeat the problem. I should reveal that the French doors have a level access sill, allowing easy entry for those with a disability but making it harder to see the underside compared with a conventional raised door sill. Our first approach is to feel for draughts around the doors. It’s pretty much game over there and then; that was easy. There are clear gaps in the door seals which are letting in cold air.
