Over de heksen zelf, als personages, ben ik ook heel enthousiast - en dan vooral over Zenith, die ik verreweg het beste personage uit de hele reeks vind. Ze is zo enthousiast en leergierig over alles dat ze maar hoort, ze bracht constant een glimlach op mijn gezicht. Ik vond het dan ook heel jammer dat het een hele tijd duurt voor Vijf haar wat beschaafder gaat behandelen. Het is gelukkig al duidelijk dat Zenith ook in Boek 3 aanwezig zal zijn - hopelijk is haar rol daar even groot. De andere heksen leren we wat minder goed kennen (wat weten we nu bijvoorbeeld van Libbet en Thea?), met uitzondering van Nara. Ik ben ook wel benieuwd hoe het nu verder moet, want als ik het goed heb... zijn er op het einde van Boek 2 niet veel heksen meer over...

Laat ik maar eerlijk zijn: het duurde een tijdje voor ik in Boek 2 kwam. Over het algemeen sprak de eerste helft van het boek me minder aan dan ik had verwacht en gehoopt. De schrijfstijl van Aisling Fowler is toegankelijk en sfeervol, waardoor lezers zich gemakkelijk kunnen inbeelden hoe deze fantasiewereld en in het bijzonder het ijspaleis eruitziet. Samen met de zwart wit illustraties gemaakt door Sophie Medvedeva zorgt het ervoor dat kinderen zich even in een andere wereld kunnen wanen.

Some children or young adult books can be quite simplistic, focusing on a linear narrative that's easy to follow. But this really leans into the more developed story, where you're not always convinced you know the truth and I think that's great fun. Zuerst ist mir die hilfreiche Karte positiv aufgefallen. Diese habe ich während des Lesens zur besseren Orientierung zu Rate gezogen. En ten derde had ik in het begin het idee dat dit boek er weer zo een was dat voornamelijk bedoeld was om Feniks haar krachten eigen te laten maken, wat zoals te verwachten was nu niet bijzonder spannend was.

Het idee om een paleis van ijs in een reusachtige, bevroren golf te huizen, is geweldig, en wat de heksen allemaal kunnen met hun magie vond ik ook heel sterk. We leren heel veel over ze. Unklug gelöst fand ich auch, dass Sperling als Nichtschwimmerin einfach ins Wasser springt und das kaum Konsequenzen für sie hat …

Keine Ahnung, ich will hier den schwarzen Peter nirgendwo hinschieben, aber hätte ich gewusst, dass es eine Trilogie ist, wäre ich der Sache anders angegangen. Vom „Meister“ hätte ich mir etwas mehr erwartet. Vielleicht erfahren wir aber ja auch im dritten Teil mehr über ihn.
