Le cocciniglie del genere Dactylopius (in particolare Dactylopius coccus e Dactylopius opuntiae) sono fitofagi associati alle Cactacee del genere Opuntia. Fatta eccezione per Dactylopius coccus, considerata specie utile perché utilizzata per l'estrazione del rosso carminio e perché il fico d'India mostra una discreta tolleranza, le altre specie di Dactylopius sono dannose a causa della immissione, con la saliva, di un principio attivo fitotossico. Queste cocciniglie sono state infatti impiegate per il controllo biologico delle infestazioni di Opuntia stricta in alcune parti del mondo ( Australia, Africa, India). Le cocciniglie s'insediano prevalentemente sui cladodi formando abbondanti colonie. La potatura, da eseguirsi in primavera o a fine estate, serve ad impedire il contatto tra i cladodi, nonché ad eliminare quelli malformati o danneggiati.
