About this deal

Like his predecessors, Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, Mankell offers a realistic portrayal of modern Sweden, where social and political issues such as immigration, racism, and national identity are intertwined with the crime story. He doesn't shy away from showing his characters' dark and complex sides, especially Wallander, who is flawed but sympathetic. The book also explores the themes of loneliness, guilt, and morality as Wallander faces ethical dilemmas and personal challenges. The writing style is clear and concise, with vivid descriptions and dialogue that capture the mood and atmosphere of the setting. It was good re-visiting these people again :) (Will have to watch the BBC SERIES again when I'm off, maybe marathon it).

Mankell's writing style is immersive and atmospheric, and his portrayal of Wallander is both nuanced and relatable. The book is filled with complex characters and unexpected twists, keeping readers on edge until the end. Gallagher, Paul (27 December 2009). "Henning Mankell creates a 'female Wallander' following star's suicide". The Observer.

Polito, Robert (April 2005). "Murder, My Swede: Henning Mankell's Scandinavian Noir". Artforum International. archived at AccessMyLibrary. Tried to read slowly to savor it but got caught up in the story again and charged through so to speak :). With a keen eye for the nitty-gritty of real police work, a sure sense of the psychological dimensions of his characters, and a clear grasp of the political and racial turmoil in contemporary Sweden, Henning Mankell delivers a tour de force in Faceless Killers. Mankell, Henning (2009). "Chapter 30". The Troubled Man. London: Random House - Vintage. ISBN 978-0-099-54840-9. Wallander wonders why “almost every policeman was divorced. Why their wives left them. Sometimes, when he read a crime novel, he discovered with a sigh things were just as bad in fiction. Policemen were divorced. That’s all there was to it” [p. 27]. What is it about being a cop that would make marriage unsustainable? How does Wallander feel about his estranged wife? What do their interactions reveal about why the marriage failed?

The introduction, discussion questions, author biography, and suggested reading list that follow are designed to enhance your group’s reading of Swedish novelist Henning Mankell’s brilliant mystery, Faceless Killers. Introduction I do like a good police procedural, and enjoy many series which are, on the surface, similar to this one, such as Ian Rankin's Rebus books, Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch, and also another Scandinavian police procedural - Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series. Still love these characters, not a perfect book but I had/have so much fun with these and they got me through a stressful work week too.

Retailers:

Why did I think that I would not like this? Oh, Robert Langdon. I got tired of him. But Kurt Wallander is different. His being an inspector (a detective) is just about any job in the office. As I read this in the past 5 working days, I could not help relate what he goes through to what I am going through in the office. There are times that even if I put everything I have (full attention, extended working hours, extensive research), there are just some things that would not work and at the time when everything looks hopeless, comes a spark of inspiration or a word, a phrase uttered by someone (in my case, my boss) that made me think: right, why did I not think of doing it that way? In Wallander's case, it was that bank teller who has excellent memory of what happened that day in the bank when Johannes Lovgren was murdered. Faceless Killers, the first novel in Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander series, is a gripping, gritty crime thriller that has inspired a generation of Nordic Noir writers and influenced many contemporary authors across the globe.
