About this deal

When a routine trip to an Inverness shopping centre is interrupted by a squad of heavily armed Santas, Hoon, his sister, and an old army colleague find themselves trapped alongside several hundred terrified hostages. In late 2020, I first had the idea of giving Hoon his own novel. It was ridiculous, I knew. Here was a character so thoroughly unpleasant that even if readers enjoyed his scenes, surely they couldn’t cope with a full length novel in which he took centre stage? Surely they couldn’t actually empathise with such a man and cheer him on? Yeah, very much so. The Hoon books were always meant to be fun, I mean they go dark at points, but it’s always been me having an absolute blast writing them. I suppose it’s been like a tour of all my writing inspirations as well, so it goes through books I’ve read, films I’ve seen, and there’s little winks and nods to those, down all the way to things like how my daughter’s really into anime and there’s little nods to that in there. So yeah, it’s been a celebration of all the fiction I’ve loved really. With it being the last one in the series as well I’d say it’s probably not as dark as some of the earlier ones, despite it being an Incel terrorist takeover! It’s more a celebration of Bob Hoon. Kirk began writing his noir fiction in 2019 and two years after launching the “DCI Logan Crime Thriller” series, he penned “Northwind,” the first of the “Robert Hoon Thriller” series.

Outnumbered, outgunned, and on unfamiliar territory, Hoon’s only chance of survival lies several hundred miles north, in a place he knows better than anyone else on Earth. I have said before; Hoon is over the top, foul mothed, and eager to use violence as a blunt instrument to find out what he needs to know. He is not above manipulating people. But in this story he is just the wrong guy in the wrong place. And he is going to spoil a lot of people’s plans for the holidays! If you’ve ever thought that Die Hard would’ve been improved by making Bruce Willis’s character a psychotic, foul-mouthed Scotsman in his mid fifties, then this is the book for you!!Northwind” the first novel of the “Robert Hoon Thrillers” series introduces our protagonist Detective Superintendent Robert Hoon. He is a larger-than-life unpleasant and foul-mouthed bully who seems like something of a caricature. Nonetheless, he is a man that does get the job done which results in a love-hate relationship with his superiors. So for those who may not know, you self-publish your crime fiction through Zertex Media, and to massive success. What was it that took you down that path of publishing, and what kind of benefits do you think it grants you as the author? While it does seem as if JD Kirk came from nowhere, he has actually been writing for years. Growing up, he loved writing short stories and comics in notebooks that his parents used to get for him. I said before that the character of Hoon is over the top. He exemplifies the stereotypes taken to an extreme. But in this story we see even more of his redeeming characteristics. We find out a fair bit more about his past. This story has no preface or afterward by Kirk, but Kirk in the afterword of the first Hoon novel informed us that:

It’s Christmas time in Inverness Scotland and sh*t is about to get real!!! By way of synopsis J.D. Kirk provided a summary saying:He is now one of the most popular fiction authors in the world with millions of copies of his novels sold. Over this time, he has grown a huge legion of fans from across the globe delighted with his Highlander series of novels.

This is the last book in the Hoon series and while I have really enjoyed it …. I do think wrapping Hoon up with a bow and sending him off the way J.D did was exactly the right thing to do. This is a bit of a Christmas crossover special, so if you are a fan of the DCI Logan series then some of your faves will make an appearance here too.I said before that the character of Hoon is over the top. He exemplifies the stereotypes taken to an extreme. But in this story we see even more of his redeeming characteristics. We see the intelligence that led Hoon to rise to the rank of Detective Chief Inspector. We also see that he is willing to sacrifice for others. And even though he has a past filled with mistakes, he will do what is right. This story has no preface or afterward by Kirk, but Kirk in the afterword of the first Hoon novel informed us that: JD Kirk’s third novel of the “Robert Hoon Thrillers” series is “Westward.” The lead protagonist Robert Hoon may have crossed the wrong people this time around and this may just be the end of him. Soon enough, he realized just how hard it was to break into the space and decided to opt for much smaller low-budget screenplays. The “Robert Hoon Thriller” series is a set of novels by the popular Scottish crime fiction author JD Kirk. Despite his massive popularity JD Kirk is actually the writing name of the award-winning children’s fiction author Barry Hutchison.

It’s like a sweary, psychotic, Scottish Die Hard.’ JD Kirk has become a bestselling sensation with his self-published crime novels. Better known as Barry Hutchison, BooksfromScotland caught up with him to talk about his latest novel and about his career as an author. Kirk says that he had made up his mind to become a writer at the age of nine. He had completed a class assignment on author Roald Dahl and realized for the first time that writing can also help people earn money. And as Kirk loved both money and writing, it seemed like he had found his perfect match. Subsequently, Kirk attempted to write and publish his first piece at the age of 11 when he submitted a letter in a Batman comic. Though he did not receive any money for his effort, it was enough for him to get his name printed as a writer and thereby cemented his ambition. And over the course of the next thirty years, Kirk successfully published more than a hundred novels under different pen names. He also wrote several animation scripts, comics, and also a few screenplays of feature-length films. Hoon is looking forward to a quiet Christmas at home sniping at his big sister Berta who has moved in with him after the events of Westward. Then he finds himself trapped inside Inverness’ main shopping centre in a snowstorm by a gang of terrorists dressed in Santa costumes who have taken hundreds of shoppers hostage, including Berta and his friend Iris. Hoon is once more going to have to take on the bad guys alone, armed only with his wits, his fists, and his unique line in insults. What’s also interesting is I have something called aphantasia, which means I have no mental pictures, I think in words. But the number of people who say, ‘Oh, wow, it was just like being there’, and I always found that fascinating just how that works, because when I read a book, quite often when there are paragraphs and paragraphs describing a scene, I’ll almost gloss over that because it’s doing me no favours. It’s like, I get it, you’re in a room! I want the dialogue and the action and the story. But a lot of people like that lingering in a place and establishing the scene, so it fascinates me how different readers respond to different ways of writing.
