About this deal

Can life. Oh how we triple love aluminum cans: not only infinitely recyclable but the most lightweight material, with the lowest carbon footprint. The holy trinity of green. Hedonistic sustainability’ is the catchphrase of Misadventure & Co, and one which is easy to get behind. The company uses baked goods to make vodka, converting the starch from the discarded products into alcohol. Since 2018 the company has received 15 rewards, and was rated 94 points on the Ultimate Beverage Challenge 2018.

Dash Soda Water contains zero sugars or sweeteners, with the sodium bicarbonate (rather than sugar or sweetener) being used to reduce the “bite” of the paired spirit when mixed. How do you drink soda water with gin? The term soda water is an ambiguous one. This is because this term has been in usage for a long time, and people use it to refer to different beverages. Soda water was the name people first gave to commercially available artificially carbonated water; this was during the late 18 th century. At present, some people use it to refer to club soda while some use it to refer to seltzer . The new range marks the brand’s first move beyond infused sparkling waters and entry into the mixer category. Discarded Spirits Co., a sustainable line from William Grants & Sons, launched in 2018. The company produces a Cascara Vermouth from the fruit that is discarded during the coffee production process, and a Banana Peel Rum, using ‘finishing’ rum, which is usually thrown away after flavouring whisky barrels, with banana peels for extra flavour. For the love of farmers. We give the farmers we work with peace of mind that their wonky or surplus produce will end up on shop shelves. Our Climate Footprint is 0.11kg CO2 per can. We have measured the climate footprint of all our drinks. We count it. Then we cut it. Continually putting in the hard yards to lower our impact on the planet. I’m pleased to say that I’ve noticed Dash Soda at really good prices, both direct from the manufacturer and elsewhere. It may be that it’s just being priced so keenly as a “launch window” thing, and the fact the cans are a 200ml “mixer size” (rather than a “soft drink size” 330ml) is a factor too. However, I have to say that I’ve been quite pleasantly surprised by the prices I’ve seen for these products. Nutritional Stuff I agree. Freehouses should be cheaper on their products as they can buy it direct. They are round here but I realise that every property is different. It all depends on the size of the pub. The bigger the pub the more he's got to cover in overheads, mortgage costs etc. Also I think some freehouses do it simply because they can. We are a B Corp, baby - Meeting high standards of overall social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. By choosing to drink Dash you can share in the smug love.

Soda water is water carbonated through artificial means and contain some minerals and dissolved solids while sparkling water is bubbly and pure water that comes directly from a natural spring or well. Processing Though soda water’s super fizziness means it holds alcohol better, sparkling water can still be used as a mixer. Classic spirits like vodka and gin can be paired with sparkling water to make a refreshing drink that’s a lot softer than a soda mixer. Fruit sparkling water is also a delicious way to spruce up a spritzer, especially when with wine or Aperol, like in our Peach Rosé . The only slight negative I would raise is that if you take too long over your mixed drink, the combination of the soda and the melted ice can mean that you end up with something more noticeably diluted than if you were to choose tonic. Dash Soda Water is really rather impressive for flavour, especially when you consider that it’s a zero calorie product with nothing artificial in it. The flavours are – with one exception – more noticeable and concentrated than they are in the (already very good) Dash waters. Rhubarb and Fiery Ginger As part of its commitment, Dash Water aims to save 2,500 tons of wonky fruit and vegetables through selling 150 million cans by 2025.

FLAVOURED SPARKLING WATER

Guilt-free drinks, with zero calories and no artificial nasties, are all the rage these days. Since I gave up drinking alcohol, I’ve become a bit of a specialist in them! What was so attractive about it was the idea of using up this waste that’s leftover from the cheese production,” says Archard. Typically people would use whey to feed their pigs, or it would go into food processing. “But it’s a wonderful material, I mean, just as wonderful as the other half of the milk – the curds. So we wanted to do something really great with it.” On the subject of coke/ lemonade there are many pubs that use post mix and still charge the same high prices and it cost a fraction of the bottled stuff.

Dash has now branched off into mixers too, with the Dash Soda Water range, which is what’s reviewed here. Made from British spring water, wonky fruit and bubbles, Dash Water has no calories, no sugar, and no sweeteners. The products are served in aluminum cans and glass bottles “Making our cans from recycled aluminium uses a tiny 8% of the energy of producing new materials,” Wright explains. The range is available in bars including The Groucho Club, Petersham Nurseries and The Cavendish. Discarded’s Cascara Vermouth is usually available at Waitrose. Both soda water and sparkling water are made by infusing still spring water with carbon dioxide under pressure, creating the fizz. However, soda water is further infused with bicarbonate of soda to help the drink hold its bubbles when spirits are added. This means soda is slightly fizzier than sparkling. Here at DASH, we’re pretty much carbonated water experts. We offer a range of tasty, flavoured sparkling water - from classic lemon to unique mango - that are all free from calories, sugars and sweeteners. All of our drinks are infused with real, wonky fruit that others say no too, because it’s our mission to combat food waste.

One of the seltzers in my regular rotation is Dash Water (you can read my review here). It tastes good, and I find the fact the company uses “wonky” reject fruit rather endearing. As such, I was intrigued when I heard they had launched a new range of mixers, in the form of Dash Soda Water. After sourcing the abandoned fruits Steinar cleans and then juices them, before adding yeast to ferment the juice. Following fermentation the drink is distilled to alcohol which is then diluted to a 40% alcoholic drink. The vodka that is produced will have a faint hint of the fruit used to make it – some are slightly apple flavoured for example, others might taste of grape. Misfits fighting food waste. 40% of all food produced goes to waste - our aim is to put a stop to it, one sip at a time. According to Garage magazine, Steinar has been working with local distillers and local food importers to increase the scope of Catch of the Day, turning it into a product that works on a commercial scale.
