About this deal

Wines are produced from Syrah, with Marsanne and Roussanne, and range from easy drinking to cellar worthy. Producers of Côtes du Rhône wines are members of the Syndicat des Vignerons des Côtes du Rhône, and at a higher level their interests are represented by Inter Rhône, which represents all the wine-growing and wine merchants of the Côtes du Rhône and the Rhône Valley and combines all promotional, economic and technical actions concerning AOC wines of the region.

This is the largest AOC and accounts for two thirds of Rhone production. Full bodied reds dominate, but the luscious whites and thirst quenching roses are well worth seeking out. Côtes du Rhône is a wine-growing Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for the Rhône wine region of France, which may be used throughout the region, also in those areas which are covered by other AOCs. In a limited part of the region, the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages AOC may be used, in some cases together with the name of the commune. Only white and sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne in this AOC! The vineyards lie on extremely steep slopes on either side of a deep valley, creating a slightly warmer microclimate, giving us zesty sparklers made in the traditional Champenoise method. The still whites are equally refreshing – terrific before a meal. Crozes-Hermitage Probably the most striking feature is the steepness of the hillsides. The vineyards are terraced to keep the soil from eroding, retain the warmth of the sun and make life a little easier for the vineyard workers! At the most demanding level of distinction, a total of 17 crus are allowed to be recognized by their village name without requiring the mention of Côtes du Rhône on the label. With the unique exception of Château-Grillet, a white septentrional within the AOC Condrieu, a feature of the nomenclature of CDR wines is that at the top level they are named only after their villages, and not after châteaux as is usual for Bordeaux wines.

A large number of varieties are allowed in the Côtes du Rhône AOC. [5] The allowed grape varieties, by colour of the wine, are indicated below. [6] Main grape varieties for the respective colour are indicated by " M", supplementary varieties (not designated for white wines) by "S", and accessory varieties by "(A)".Further up the scale from the Côtes du Rhône AOC the Côtes du Rhône-Villages AOC is produced by 95 authorized communes in the departments of the Ardèche, the Drôme, the Gard, and the Vaucluse.

Detailed map of the Rhône wine region, with separate maps of Southern Rhône ("Zoom A") and Northern Rhône ("Zoom B"). The north-east/south-west facing terroir of the Vinsobres hillsides rises to over 500 metres, and is characterised by a wide variety of soil types. Their character and potential gives wines with superb complexity. The village of Vinsobres is divided up by altitude, ranging from 184 metres at its lowest to a peak of 509 metres. Average altitude is 325 metres.

THE SOUTHERN RHONE

The vineyards are planted with 14 varietals (18 if you count the variations!) at four levels of altitude as the land rises up from the Rhone River. Lirac, Roquemaure, Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres et Saint-Géniès-de-Comolas sur la rive droite du Rhône. Côtes du Rhône méridional from Montélimar to Avignon in the southern latitudes, produced by 123 communes. Robert Laffont-Bouquins, Paris, 1984. These wines are easy drinking, food loving wines that are perfect for everyday. The white blends and rosés are equally delicious too, even if a little harder to find.

Famous the world over, the wines from Hermitage come from the small vineyards overlooking the village of Tain-l’Hermitage. Originally recognized as Coteaux de Tricistan in 1973, this region was allowed to change its name in 2012. Seems there was a nuclear power plant in the area with the same name that had a little meltdown in 2008; not a marketer’s dream!
