The distillation of petroleum yields an ever widening range of organic pigments which are often termed as 'modern'. Many of the pigments used in Cotman are organic.
Concentrating on these components of watercolor paint will steer you towards the best choices. Professional or Student Grade Paints? Raw Sienna: PBr7 (Semi-transparent & single pigment). This color has a similar appearance to Yellow Ochre. One of its distinctive qualities is that you can paint superb glowing skies without giving a green tint to you blue sky wash! Winsor & Newton watercolors are known for their softness and transparency, and most of Cotman’s colors showcase these attributes. Although Cotman performed extremely well on cotton watercolor paper, I didn’t think these characteristics worked as well when journaling on standard papers—even on the good stuff. The modern organic pigments, e.g. Cotman hue colours, are made of very fine particles which cause them to stain the paper. The traditional colours e.g. earths, tend to lift from the paper more easily. Cool Red – Quinacridone Rose: PV19 (Transparent & single pigment). This is a beautiful bright saturated pink color. It mixes very smoothly like all the quinacridone paints that I use. Burnt Umber: PBr7 (Semi-transparent & single pigment). This is the darkest of the earth colors and has a rich warm earth appearance. I use it a lot to add warmth to shadows. Darks: McEnaney adds that most watercolor artists like a brush that comes to a really nice point, as well as flat brushes that will come in different sizes. "A good brush holds a lot of water, so you're not dipping it all the time," she says.
Below is a breakdown of all the colors currently in my studio palette. These are mostly single pigment and transparent paints which I selected after long deliberation. I suggest you begin with a set of six primary colors (a warm and cool version of yellow, blue, and red). In theory, you can mix any color using just the primary colors, but in reality you need at least one warm and cool version of each primary color to get a full range of mixable colors. Also, the case is bulky and the colors are close together which causes constant accidental mixing. (Contamination is easily apparent in the lead photo.)There aren't any pans so the paints must be completely used or removed to reuse the box. The hinge is very flimsy, and the case sometimes has trouble remaining flat during use. Tubes give you the best of both worlds and in my opinion work out cheaper in the long run. You can either work with fresh paint squeezed from the tubes, or if you want the convenience of a palette of colored pans, you can simply fill up some empty pans with paint from the tube! And on top of that, one 15ml paint tube will fill up your pans more than once!

Primary Colors: As a general statement the traditional pigments granulate, e.g. earths, ultramarine. The modern organic pigments do not, e.g. Cotman hue colours. If you wish to avoid granulation in your painting, the use of distilled water can reduce it, particularly in very hard water areas. Staining The range offers a balanced spectrum of 40 colours which are available in Half Pans, 8ml tubes and 21ml tubes. Although Cotman drew a lot of attention with cotton watercolor paper, I didn’t think these characteristics could be duplicated on standard paper–even if the papers were of high quality.
