Despite its wartime success, the folding bike was not immediately popular with the wider British population, particularly as the bicycles in general began to lose their popularity in the early 1950s. Of course, Dahon do create commuter style folding bikes made for train journeys and cities, as well as ‘performance’ bikes for those with a need for speed and training. However, there are now scores of manufacturers globally providing competition, each offering a different take on the folding bike. Some have even branched out into the ebike market: adding a battery and a motor to allow you to ride further, faster, without the sweat. This is where we come in! If you’re looking for something a little less ordinary, Dahon might have you covered. Brompton has introduced titanium to its range and there are brands, such as Hummingbird, making carbon folders. Higher quality components will also reduce the weight, as will opting for fewer gears - such as a singlespeed version - but this will only really suit someone who doesn't expect to come across many hills in their use of the bike. The bike was popular for short distance or multi-mode travel and commuting - and for keeping in a vehicle or boat, although the price was usually above the heavier steel framed folding bikes by Raleigh, Peugeot, Puch and other manufacturers. Adjustable handlebars and seat height meant it could accommodate different heights and riding preferences. By the 1980s, however, good folding bikes had taken off and there was much greater competition.
