About this deal

AdBlue is used to reduce diesel exhaust emissions. It became compulsory for all diesel vehicles to use a form of DEF in September 2015 when the EU introduced Euro 6, their strictest emissions standard yet. If you’re interested in the science, the AdBlue mixture is made from urea (the stuff you find in urine) and is injected in tiny quantities into the car’s exhaust gases, where it rapidly breaks down mono-nitrogen oxides in the fumes. This helps to reduce the environmental damage caused by diesel fumes and keeps the air cleaner – which is good for us all. In particular, it cuts NOx pollution and particulate emissions. Selective Catalytic Reduction is a clever technology system, which can send DEF into the exhaust stream of your diesel engine, to trigger a chemical reaction which can turn nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, water, and carbon dioxide (CO2). AdBlue® can freeze at temperatures below -11°C, however it will usually thaw due to the heat of the engine in cold winter conditions, without any change in concentration or effectiveness. If you own a diesel, chances are you need to use AdBlue® – a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) used in millions of cars, light commercial vehicles, HGVs, buses and coaches across the world. But what is it, what does it do, what is it made of, how does it work and how do you best use it to ensure your car performs efficiently and safely? Read on to learn more and have all your AdBlue® questions explained.

There are two ways of achieving this reduction: through a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system and through exhaust gas recirculation. If your vehicle uses the SCR system, then you’ll need AdBlue. A full tank of AdBlue should last between 6,000 and 7,000 miles, on average. 1 litre of AdBlue lasts around 600 miles, but this can be affected by your driving style. The more fuel your vehicle uses, the more AdBlue it will consume as well. Limp home' mode limits your vehicle's power and performance, allowing you to get home or to a garage safely. The Halfords Adblue 5L Pouch has a flexible non-glugging design, reducing the risk of spillage while also being a convienient size easily to lift and pour. It’s for these reasons that governments set limits on vehicular NOx emissions and promote the use of AdBlue®. This improves air quality and reduces the danger of diesel pollution-related illness and death. If your car runs out of AdBlue, it will enter 'limp home' mode. Your car treats this DEF like fuel and won't run without it.

CO2 footprint of Yara's AdBlue 3,5-litre pouches is approximately two thirds less than that of a conventional canUrea is a compound that breaks down nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water, and it’s also found in urine. The urea in AdBlue is manmade. No one is quite sure where the urine myth originated from, but the confusion is down to the primary ingredient, urea.

The ammonia in the urea breaks down the NOx emissions through a series of chemical reactions. This means your exhaust releases Nitrogen and water vapour into the atmosphere instead of any harmful emissions. If you ignore the warning light and let your tank run dry, your car will enter 'limp home' mode and you won't be able to restart the engine once you switch it off. This warning light means that you have about 1,500 miles of fluid left. You should look to fill up your tank as soon as possible to avoid it running out. Peugeot recommends that, due to the position of the tank, the refill is carried out by a local dealer, but says that if you intend to do it yourself, the vehicle must be on a flat surface with the engine switched off. However, you may need slightly less to completely top your tank up if you're refilling it just after the warning light came on.
