Focal ratio: All lenses in this comparison have a focal ratio which becomes smaller the further you zoom in. The Tamron 70-300 starts at f4.5 at 70mm focal length and reduces its focal ratio to f4.8 from 88mm, f5.0 from 116mm, f5.3 from 144mm, f5.6 from 175mm, f6.0 from 217mm, and f6.3 from 268mm onwards. The F-Nikkor 70-300 is a bit brighter (1/3 of a stop at the long end), same with the Z-Nikkor 100-400. [0] As a high-end L-lens, the 100-300 is of course weather-sealed to the same standard as previous Canon super-telephotos, including a rubber grommet at the mount. Note the white coating on the barrel is now more effective under hot conditions than the old 300’s coat. Consequently, in use it feels well matched even to a small body like the Sony A1 camera, as shown in the photos below, although fitting a vertical battery grip definitely helps with the overall balance.Let’s compare the new Tamron 70-300mm f4.5-6.3 Di III (“Tamron 70-300” for short) to theNikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR S (“Z-Nikkor 100-400”) and Nikon AF-P 70-300mm f4.5-5.6E ED VR (“F-Nikkor 70-300”) which was introduced in 2015 and still can be used via FTZ adapter on Nikon’s Z cameras. As usual I’ve rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a [0] if it’s standard or just average, and [-] if there’s a disadvantage. The lens is incredibly easy to use. Simply attach it to your camera body of choice and go have fun. As far as telephoto lenses go, it is straightforward. The Fujifilm 70-300mm lens has the added benefit of the focus limiting switch to achieve the swiftest autofocus, whether you are out in the wilderness or in the studio. I love the convenience of the aperture ring on the lens. The aperture can still be controlled on the camera body for anyone who doesn’t enjoy this feature. The zoom ring is effortless and allows for multiple perspectives to be achieved within seconds.

In comparison, the Nikon 300mm f/4D AF-S with its 90mm diameter and 222.5mm length is a lot bigger. It also weighs 300 grams more than the Tokina. The Canon EF 300mm f/4 L USM (The non-Image-Stabilized model from 1991 and the IS model from 1997) lenses from the 90’s compare favorably with the Tokina in weight, but their size is almost identical to that of the Nikon lens. The only 300mm f/4 full-frame lens that handily beats the Tokina in size is the relatively new Nikon 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens whose usage of Phase Fresnel (PF) elements make it a tiny 147.5mm in length and just 755grams. Thanks to its small size and form factor, the Tokina balances effortlessly on even the smallest of DSLR’s which makes it a fantastic companion for long hikes. With their slender 300mm width, these radiators boast a notably narrow profile. Among them, you will find an array of options, ranging from extremely compact to impressively tall and substantial units. As a result, these versatile radiators have the capacity to effectively warm anything from small cloakrooms to much larger spaces. Sony says the lens produces bright images throughout the frame, with no darkening in the corners. It includes 2x XD linear motors for fast and precise autofocus and is balanced for comfortable handheld shooting with smooth panning. A number of controls allow for customizing its performance and a new button allows for instant APC-S cropping. The lens is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, which turn it into a 420mm F4 and 600mm F6 lens, respectively.

In addition to S, M, and L focus spots, Sony added XS and XL options so photographers can dial in the exact focus spot areas they prefer. The camera supports in-body, 5-axis optical image stabilization that covers 8 stops. Sony says this supports exposure values down to -5 at f/1.8.

The lens joins Sony's top G Master sports and wild-life focused lenses, including the 400mm F2.8 GM OSS and the 600mm F4 GM OSS. There is no front filter thread. We didn't experience very much "hunting" at all, either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing virtually all of the time, and it's also a very quiet performer that makes it ideal for movie shooting. Aperture ring and other control elements: The focus ring on the Tamron 70-300 can be assigned in camera to operate the aperture, exposure compensation, or ISO sensitivity – or simply switched off. This is similar to the multi-function control ring on the Z-Nikkor 100-400 but there are no other control elements/buttons/switches.
