About this deal

The benefit of the keyboard case is that it is thinner and lighter overall than the usual lower half of a laptop or convertible. Detachable-hybrid tablets, however, tend to be top-heavy, because all of the system's components and batteries, and hence their weight, are necessarily localized in the screen. You'll want to examine your usage patterns to determine whether holding the PC in your hands and interacting with the touch screen is really right for you. In terms of comfort and usability, these smaller issues result in a system that is serviceable and useful, if not ideal. The keys are flush together rather than chiclet style—more like the XPS 13 Plus keyboard—which has a pleasing look and maximizes room on an otherwise compact solution. The keys have an enjoyable bounce, and typing is largely comfortable and easy. Hard drive retention: Hard drive retention is not available on models with a soldered hard drive, including XPS 9315 2in1, Chromebooks or Venue tablets, except the Venue 11 Pro. Incredible Expansion: Equipped with dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, 2 USB-C ports, 4 USB-A ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, SD/microSD card slots, and a 3.5 mm AUX port. In a convertible machine, the battery and motherboard are usually located in the base (as in a traditional laptop), so it's balanced for use on a lap or a tabletop. The stable bottom lid of the clamshell is also a better typing platform than the sometimes-flimsy panel of a detachable keyboard case. There's also more room for batteries in a laptop form factor (the bottom half never goes away), which results in improved battery life.

I've appeared on CBS News, in USA Today, and at many other outlets to offer analysis on breaking technology news. Three other benchmarks focus on the CPU, using all available cores and threads, to rate a PC's suitability for processor-intensive workloads. Maxon's Cinebench R23 uses that company's Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene, while Primate Labs' Geekbench 5.4 Pro simulates popular apps ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning. Finally, we use the open-source video transcoder HandBrake 1.4 to convert a 12-minute video clip from 4K to 1080p resolution (lower times are better). Note that, as a result, a couple of the systems here—most commonly the MacBook Air, but the Surface Pro, too—will be missing from a few of the following results; that means they were unable to run or complete some of these Windows-based tests. Productivity Tests These aren't beefed-up Android tablets—you're still buying a PC with a full operating system, whether that's ChromeOS or Windows. Apple, with its MacBooks, isn't a player in this category of laptop; Apple has doggedly pointed folks who need a touch screen and tablet/laptop convertibility toward its iOS-equipped iPad and iPad Pro lines, paired with an optional keyboard.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

For many laptop shoppers, portability is king, and there's nothing more portable than a tablet. With touch screens and support for a pen or stylus, the most popular laptops today often do double duty as tablets. There are two ways to achieve this: Convertible 2-in-1 designs that rotate between notebook and slate modes with 360-degree hinges, or detachable models that let you remove the keyboard entirely to become a standalone tablet. You have a keyboard and touchpad when you need it, or can go all touch screen when that's more convenient. That means with this year's XPS 13 2-in-1, the processor, storage, and all other components are contained behind the tablet screen, unlike convertibles and standard laptops, which house those parts primarily beneath the keyboard. This results in a much smaller, lighter device, but also lighter performance due to the thermal constraints of the smaller, thinner frame. A: It’s recommended that you use the included 3 ft USB-C cable. If you need to use a different cable (due to loss etc.), then any other USB-C cable with support for USB 3.1 Gen 2 and 85W Power Delivery would also be compatible. Detaching the tablet and leaving the heft of the keyboard behind is optimal when, say, you're actively presenting a slideshow on a big screen and using the tablet to draw notes on the slides in real time. Reattaching the keyboard takes mere seconds, so you will be able to easily (and comfortably) change the slideshow's content during your lunch hour if you need to change your talk's focus for your afternoon session. The Intel Core-based version of the Surface Pro 9 is the best detachable tablet around, thanks to its impressive performance, outstanding battery life, and pen-friendly 3:2 aspect ratio screen. The latest model of the class leader merges the iconic Surface Pro design, honed over many generations, with up-to-date hardware and improved battery life. With a sleek design, upgradable storage, and two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, the Surface Pro 9 is easily the most capable tablet-style 2-in-1 on the market, and our favorite Windows detachable. Who It's For

We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing — both synthetic and real-world — before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management. The host device must support Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode or USB-C 3.1 (generation 1 or 2). We primarily test PCs using UL's PCMark 10, which simulates a variety of real-world productivity and content-creation workflows to measure overall performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet work, web browsing, and videoconferencing. We also run PCMark 10's Full System Drive test to assess the load time and throughput of a laptop's boot drive.

The World's No. 1 Mobile Charging Brand*

Unless you only plan to use your laptop on your desk, battery life matters. Even within the home or office, having plenty of juice enables you to work on the couch or at the conference table, without being chained to the nearest outlet. For the best portability, we recommend getting a laptop that lasted over 8 hours on the Laptop Mag Battery Test. The longest-lasting laptops endure for over 10 hours.

When we ran the Handbrake video transcoding benchmark, the Plus transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 8 minutes and 17 seconds, roasting the 9:47 category average. The MacBook Pro saw a time of 6:51. That is not too shabby for a mainstream laptop.. If you fail to return the goods, we will collect them, and will charge you the direct cost of collection. If you fail to take reasonable care of the goods before they are returned to us, and this results in damage or deterioration, we will charge you for the reduction in value. Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to use your computer on your lap or carry it around a lot, go for one with a 12, 13 or 14-inch display. If you want to use the computer on tables and desks and won't carry it around much, a 15-inch model may give you more value. Some gaming rigs, media machines and workstations even have 17 or 18-inch screens, but those are hardest to carry. Due to the paint processes used, a colour variation with matching products is possible and therefore may not be a 100% match. Our experienced team of writers and editors scour the available information about the laptop and put it through its paces to determine which is best for you. But before they start, the testing team subjects each system to a rigorous regimen of synthetic and real-world tests to see how a system handles the type of work and games you’re most likely to throw at it.

Form, Function, and Features: A Well-Rounded Tablet

Unparalleled Charging Options: With 85W and 15W Thunderbolt 3 ports plus an 18W USB-C Power Delivery port, PowerExpand offers multiple ways to get a high-speed charge for anything from laptops to phones and more. Compatibility Information: Works with Windows laptops or non-M1 MacBooks equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port. Not compatible with M1 MacBooks or Linux or Chrome OS laptops. Meanwhile, the display's color coverage falls in line with the others, and the brightness measurements are strong. The maximum brightness rating confirms the eye test: This is a colorful, bright, and sharp panel. We just wish the tablet lasted longer on a charge. If you receive any damaged items on your delivery, please state the full extent of the damage on the driver’s delivery note when signing for the goods. Asus has done it again. They’ve changed the definition of what the best gaming laptop is. By itself, the Asus ROG Flow X13 is a compelling laptop. It’s very rare to see a 13-inch gaming laptop and even rarer for it to be a 2-in-1. But Asus didn’t stop there, they threw a high-powered AMD Ryzen 9 processor into the mix and even outfitted the notebook with its own discrete Nvidia GPU.
