The making of Gundam Wing was influenced by Mobile Fighter G Gundam with the idea of having five main characters. Originally, the series was meant to be titled Gundam Meteor after "Operation Meteor." It ran for forty-nine half-hour episodes, beginning on April 7, 1995 and ending on March 29, 1996. Directed by Masashi Ikeda and written by Katsuyuki Sumizawa ( Yoroiden Samurai Troopers) with music by Kō Ōtani, the series was loosely based on the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate.The story of Gundam Wing begins in the year After Colony 195 with the start of Operation Meteor, five disgruntled scientists' plan for revenge against the tyrannical OZ military organization for their oppression over the space colonies. The operation involves five young boys who have each been chosen and trained by one of the five rogue scientists, then sent to Earth independently in extremely advanced Mobile Suits, one designed by each of the scientists, known as "Gundams". Their mobile suits are called Gundams because they are constructed from a rare and astonishingly durable material known as Gundanium Alloy, which can only be created in outer space. Used in the Glory of the Losers manga. It is developed by Howard when he finishes upgrading Wing Zero and the other Gundams for proper use in space. Like the Proto Zero's shield, it is made of Gundanium Alloy. In addition to being applied with anti-beam coating, it is equipped with Wing Vulcans on both sides. It becomes the nose in Neo-Bird Mode, having excellent aerodynamic performance in the atmosphere and also functions as a ram when charging. The head Vulcan Guns are omitted from the Wing Gundam EW version, though they are still listed among Wing's stats in the Glory of the Losers manga. Wing Zero was based on the Zero Frame technology developed by the five Gundam Scientists, which was an inner frame with all the necessary components for the mobile suit to operate, completely separate from the armor platings and energy conduits for weapons. The performance of the frame itself surpasses that of the OZ-00MS Tallgeese, and the complete separation of armor and internal structure allows Wing Zero to continue fighting after losing up to 90% of its armor. Due to the closure of Bandai Entertainment, the series was out-of-print for sometime. On October 11, 2014 at their 2014 New York Comic Con panel, Sunrise announced they will be releasing all of the Gundam franchise, including Gundam Wing in North America though distribution from Right Stuf Inc., beginning in Spring 2015. [6] Right Stuf released the series on Blu-ray and DVD in two sets in November 2017. [7] In addition, a collector's edition set containing the complete series, Endless Waltz, Operation Meteor and the Frozen Teardrop picture drama was released in December 2017. After the battle, Wing Zero flew Heavyarms to the Peacemillion, where Howard and his crew repaired and upgraded the five Gundams for space combat. Wing Zero received a fine-tuned shield from the upgrade process, allowing it to transform into Neo-Bird Mode. With their newly repaired, upgraded, and resupplied Gundams, the G Team alongside Lucrezia Noin would then sortie to face the White Fang's mobile doll army of WF-02MD Virgo IIs. Part way through the battle, Heero noticed Zechs - now Milliardo - in the Gundam Epyon joining the battlefield, and left to go face him. The initial design of Wing Gundam was to follow the " nationality" trend from Mobile Fighter G Gundam. Wing's design is Japanese and, according to designer Kunio Okawara's comments, is heavily based on the God Gundam. It should be noted that the Gundam's wings were missing from this initial design, and it wasn't until the second draft that the wings, as well as its transformation ability, were added. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, also known in Japan as New Mobile Report Gundam Wing [a] ( 新機動戦記ガンダム W ( ウイング ), Shin Kidō Senki Gandamu Wingu), is 1995 Japanese mecha anime series directed by Masashi Ikeda and written by Katsuyuki Sumizawa. It is the sixth installment in the Gundam franchise, taking place in the "After Colony" timeline. As with the original series, the plot of Gundam Wing centers on a war in the future (specifically, the year After Colony 195) between Earth and its orbital colonies in the Earth-Moon system.

The Gundam Fix Figuration's figurine of Hajime Katoki's redesign of the Wing Gundam is named as "XXXG-01WE Wing Gundam [Early Type]". However, the Master Grade releases of this design use the name "XXXG-01W Wing Gundam". A slight variation of the latter name, "XXXG-01W Wing Gundam EW", is used in the Glory of the Losers manga. Wing was the only Gundam of the original five of Gundam Wing to never receive an upgrade during the series as it was instead replaced by its prototype, the Wing Zero.
