About this deal

To prevent the need for seam sealing, we recommend the blog How To Care For You Tent - Cleaning, Maintenance & Storage. On heavier-weight tent fabrics—about 68 Denier and above—seam taping is an excellent solution. That’s because the tape adheres to these fabrics well, holding tight for long-term protection.

If your tent is seam taped from the manufacturer, you will not need to seam seal your tent. However, over time seam tape can become damaged and flake away. This is especially the case with thinner and more lightweight fabrics, in which the tape degrades faster. There is little point in investing in a waterproof or water-resistant fabric if you don't properly treat the seams to prevent water from seeping in. There are generally two methods of waterproofing seams: a liquid "glue" to seal all holes, vs. bondable tape applied with heat. If your fabric cannot handle any kind of heat, you'll have to use the liquid. If you can use an iron, I recommend the seam tape. It's neater and pretty fun to apply. Spread the seam open and cut off the raw edge by placing the thin tip of the scissors 1/4 inch away from the seam line on one side. It does not matter which raw edge you cut off but right-handed people will find it easier to do step 5 if they cut off the right edge and left-handed people will find it easier to cut off the left edge. Using the curve of a pressing ham or the edge of your ironing board, position the seam so that it is flat.Sealing your seam for waterproofing is really a choice you make for outdoor clothing that needs to keep you warm and dry.Without taped seams, the tiny needle perforations on the seam will allow water to penetrate your weather-resistant clothing. Wrap the longer side of the seam around the shorter side. Place the raw edge right against the seam line and either iron the fabric down or pin it with the straight pins. I’m confused about how cutting one side vs the other makes it easier for right-/left-handed people. Can you not just start from the other side of the fabric and achieve the same goal?

In this article, we reveal all you need to know about seam sealing, from how the sealing’s done and why it’s necessary all the way through to the role sealed seams play in keeping you dry on your hiking and camping adventures. What are taped seams? A definitionNote that we will cover the seam-sealing tape with baking/parchment paper when ironing, so that it doesn't adhere to the baseplate of the iron. Sealing a flat seam Finally, it’s important to not get any sealant on your tent’s zips and mesh. I’d therefore recommend putting painters tape over your zippers and other sensitive sections. Working on your ironing surface, lay the seam sealing tape over the seam on the wrong side of the garment. Ensure that the entire seam allowance, as well as the rows of stitching, are covered by the seam-sealing tape. PRESSING - Avoid putting the iron directly on the tape and use a presser cloth. Take your time and hold the heat down on the presser cloth. It is a pressing action rather than sliding. Use a tailor’s ham to help with the sleeve seams and curved seams.
