About this deal

Journalist Ben Harper is on his way home when he sees the flames in the churchyard. The derelict community centre is on fire. And somebody is trapped inside. With Ben's help the person escapes, only to flee the scene before they can be identified. Now the small town of Haddley is abuzz with rumours. Was this an accident, or arson? Now there are numerous amounts of characters in this book so be on the ball to know whats going on. They all play a role in the twelve secrets. The tone is painfully tragic when the past and the present collide in this multi layered story that is sure to intrigue any crime lover. The storyline is believable as are the characters and this makes it a brilliant story to get lost in. Character development was thorough, and I enjoyed getting to know the various personalities that made up the town. I’ve developed a relationship with Ben – crucial when this is the start of a series. I really do look forward to reading more about him.

Ben Harper was engaging and sympathetic. As this is touted to be the first in a series featuring Ben Harper, I am confident that I will try to follow this series to its conclusion. After reading an interview with the author, I understand that PC Dani Cash will have more of a presence in the second novel in the series. – I am anxious to find out more about her character. I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel from Sphere (an imprint of Little, Brown UK) via NetGalley – at my request, for my own reading enjoyment and the writing of this review. With Twelve Secrets I started with an idea for the beginning and pretty much knew what I wanted the end to be but everything in between was the journey along the way. I had certain events I knew would happen as the story unfolded but where they would fit and how they would occur, I wasn’t sure. I wanted to try to imagine events as they would unfold in real life and how people would react to them. One thing then triggers another because really it’s a story about people and their own secrets. Twenty years on Ben is one of the best true crime journalists in the country. He has left the past behind, thanks to the support of his close-knit hometown community. But when he learns about a fresh murder case with links to his brother's death, Ben's life is turned upside down once more. He soon find himself caught in a web of lies, one that implicates everyone around him. And on his quest for answers, Ben discovers one very important truth:

THE RICHARD AND JUDY BOOK CLUB PICK FOR DECEMBER 2022

When I was growing up, if anyone asked me what I wanted to be I would say a journalist and a writer. I never made it to first part, but I guess now thirty or forty years later, I’ve made it to the second. In this new book, we see the return of leading characters Ben Harper and Dani Cash, with the story allowing the reader deeper inside their lives. By introducing new areas of the town, such as the centuries old church standing on the riverbank and the terraced homes built on Haddley Hill, I was also able to bring in new characters and new lives, each one embedded in the darkest parts of Haddley’s past. I loved exploring and imagining new parts of the town and meeting characters who had made Haddley their home for decades. Ominous at the beginning, breathless by the end ... this is excellent hardcore suspense." - Lee Child First of all with an endorsement from James Patterson I knew I couldn't go wrong with this book. Robert has co authored 3 books with him.

I remember watching the first series of Broadchurch and like so many people was absolutely gripped by it and the intensity of its setting. In creating Haddley, I set out to create a small community where lots of people know each other, and each has their own secrets. Haddley is a fictionalised version of Putney in London where the river and outside spaces play a big part in people’s lives. When you’re not writing you work for Penguin’s sales team. How has it been to experience the other side of the publishing process? Well this book took me completely by surprise. In a good way. a very good way. I'm not sure quite what I was expecting when I started reading, but what I found was a story that was compelling from the off, my interest well and truly piqued as we are introduced to journalist Ben Harper. It's clear from the very beginning that his family history is not that of your run of the mill journalist, and when he is asked to produce a personal piece for his paper on the anniversary of his mother's death, he agrees to do so, but only on his own terms. For Ben's brother was murdered and his mother died in very difficult circumstances, but something inside of Ben is telling him there is far more to the story than the tragedy that the world has so far been told. And boy is there. Absolutely addictive. An unforgettable and nuanced cast of characters, a claustrophobic setting, and a suspenseful and chilling examination of the dark and destructive power of secrets. You will sleep with your eyes open after reading this one." - Gilly MacMillan The characterisations were amazing, especially the protagonist Ben, and PC Dani Cash. There were a variety of characters, and ages, and the author wrote and juggled all of them effortlessly, from kids right through to the elderly. And, he writes ‘evil’ well too. The dialogue and relationships were perfection – Ben and Dani’s banter, Ben’s next door neighbour’s admonishing mothering, and the little details, like Ben’s unhealthy diet, and Dani’s issues with her work colleagues, really made character’s individual. The reader response to Twelve Secrets has been amazing, and way beyond anything I had ever imagined possible. I hope all of those readers who do return to Haddley and St Marnham find something strangely familiar, while discovering a story that is both new and full of unexpected turns. What a riveting read! The story pulled me in from the beginning and spit me out exhausted at the end. What an absolute humdinger of an ending with a twist that I did not see coming at all! Ben Harper è un giornalista d'inchiesta ma nel suo passato ci sono delle ombre: il fratello ucciso da due ragazzine e la madre morta suicida.

Then, twelve years later, his mum (Clare) jumped in front of a train on her morning commute to work. Underneath” by Anne Goodwin – Book Review #NovNov23 #novella @inspiredquill #Underneath#BookReview November 22, 2023 My desire to be a journalist must have stayed with me though as Ben Harper, the lead character in Twelve Secrets, is an investigative journalist. I think all authors are asked if there is anything of them in their characters, so I guess there is that part of me in Ben. I learnt at CNN if you want to be first to a story you have not to worry about what others might think and Ben’s doesn’t shy away from taking risks to get to the truth. In Twelve Secrets we met the characters who live around Haddley Common, and the story told of the entangled lives they shared. For Eleven Liars, I realised I could broaden out the community, allowing the reader to see different parts of the Haddley, while still maintaining the claustrophobic sense of fiercely guarded secrets. As the story progresses we start to uncover some of the secrets being kept in this small town. Some were deeply upsetting and some made me angry for those affected but they all served a clear purpose in helping to bring together a compulsive read.
