The two meet as Rhayader helps Fritha care for a snow goose she has found, despite his solitary lifestyle. The bird has been injured by hunters shooting at it. In 1948, a spoken word recording featuring Herbert Marshall, with music by Victor Young was issued on Decca records. A winner in Radio 4’s search to identify literature’s most neglected novel the short story was championed by Michael Morpurgo, the leading children’s author. He said: “I still have the copy with my 13-year-old handwriting in it. It is an epic story told in a very few words. I am pleased it has won because the short story has been a neglected form. It is a beautiful description of extraordinary affection between two people without that becoming a full-blown love affair.” His short story "The Man Who Hated People" was reworked into an unpublished short story "The Seven Souls of Clement O'Reilly", adapted into the movie Lili (1953) and later staged as the musical Carnival! (1961). The film Lili is a poignant, whimsical fairy tale, the story of an orphaned waif, a naïve young woman whose fate is thrown in with that of a traveling carnival and its performers, a lothario magician and an embittered puppeteer. In 1954, Gallico published the novella The Love of Seven Dolls, based on "The Man Who Hated People". The versions, while differing, share a core theme surrounding the girl and the puppeteer. The puppeteer, communicating with Lili through his puppets as a surrogate voice, develops a vehicle whereby each of them can freely express their inner pain and anguished emotions.

The Snow Goose: A Story of Dunkirk is a novella by the American author Paul Gallico. It was first published in 1940 as a short story in The Saturday Evening Post, after which he expanded it to create a short novella which was published on 7 April 1941. In about 1947, Nat Wolff produced an album of three 78rpm records of music by Victor Young, subtitled A drama with with sound effects and music. It was re-released in the fifties as an LP. Of course, The Snow Goose is really only a short story, and like most good short stories, it has been anthologized. It can be found in a lovely anthology called Read with me by Thomas Costain, published by Doubleday in the mid-sixties - the stories in here are really very good indeed. It can also be found, of course, in the 1941 collection of O. Henry prize winners. Or just get hold of Selected Stories, Confessions of a Story Writer (but not Further Confessions...), Three Stories, Gallico Magic or The Best of Paul Gallico. There is also an extract from the book in Animal Stories, a collection edited by Michael Morpurgo.

The Snow Goose is a powerful book, a book what you will be sad to finish and it comes very highly recommended. This is a story of compassion it poses questions about the human understanding and the need for friendship, companionship, love and sacrifice. Written with honesty and an incredible amount of tenderness. In 2003, John Harvey and The Puppet Lab in Edinburgh, toured the UK with a puppet-adaptation of the book.A book called The Snow Geese has recently been published by William Fiennes; it is a travel book about the Snow Goose and it's migrations. The author was inspired by reading The Snow Goose as a child. Though his name was well-known in the United States, he was an unknown in the rest of the world. In 1941, the Snow Goose changed all that, and he became, if not a best-selling author by today's standards, a writer who was always in demand. Apart from a short spell as a war correspondent between 1943 and 1946, he was a full-time freelance writer for the rest of his life. He has lived all over the place, including England, Mexico, Lichtenstein and Monaco, and he lived in Antibes for the last years of his life.

In 1937, in Gallico's "Farewell to Sport" he stated, "For all her occasional beauty and unquestioned courage, there has always been something faintly ridiculous about the big-time lady athletes." In 2005, a televised disaster film titled The Poseidon Adventure, which was a remake of the movie inspired by Gallico's novel, was aired; the Captain, played by Peter Weller, is named after Gallico. In 1976, RCA released an album called The Snow Goose with music written and orchestrated by Ed Welch and Spike Milligan. [8] [9] Contributions were made by Harry Edgington and Alan Clare. The album was produced by Welch and Stuart Taylor for Quarry Productions Ltd, with artistic direction from Milligan. Gallico's original story was adapted for this recording by Milligan in Australia in 1976. The music is published by Clowns Music Ltd. Milligan provided the narration throughout.
