Pitchfork.com. 19 February 2021 . Retrieved 4 January 2022. Il libro si divide in tre parti che, palesemente, ci parlano dell’evoluzione e del taglio di questa storia.

There was one man behind the counter, a small, chubby man in a white shirt and tie, dusting the shelves. The man stopped dusting, looked at him for a moment, a trifle strangely, and said, "Yes sir?" Tevis also wrote The Steps of the Sun (1983), The Queen's Gambit (1983), and The Color of Money (1984), a sequel to The Hustler. His short stories were collected in Far from Home in 1981.Three of Tevis's six novels were adapted for major motion pictures, and one for a TV mini-series. The Hustler, directed by Robert Rossen, and The Color of Money, directed by Martin Scorsese, followed the escapades of fictional pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson. The Man Who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg, was released in 1976; it was subsequently re-made in 1987 as a TV film, and in 2022 as a TV series. The Queen’s Gambit is a 2020 Netflix mini-series starring Anya Taylor-Joy.

The critical path into The Man Who Fell to Earth begins with a detailed examination of Walter Tevis' neglected 1963 source novel, followed by a discussion of the film's long initial development and unusual production history, culminating in a close analysis of the film itself, exploring its elliptical editing style, its mixed critical reception and its curious legacy. This book is a welcome and much-needed exploration of one of the most haunting and enigmatic science fiction movies ever made. a b Metcalf, Mitch (June 28, 2022). He heard a man remark, in passing, "... like I say, they don't make cars like that one no more," and, although the enunciation was odd, less crisp than he had expected, he could understand the man easily. Newton, questo è il suo nome, ha un quoziente intellettivo che sbalordisce, una volta e mezzo superiore alla media terrestre, e possiede una cultura essenzialmente scientifica, vasta e approfondita. A character by the name Thomas Jerome Newton appears in the TV series Fringe, as does David Robert Jones, which is David Bowie's birth name. Newman, Kim (23 January 2007). He stared at himself in the mirror for a long time crying. Then he spoke aloud, to himself, in English. "Who are you?", he said. "And where do you belong?" From the writer of The Hustler and The Color of Money, it came as a surprise to me, that he also wrote such notable science-fiction. A book written during the Cold War and as lot of art at the time is heavily influenced by it. The story also has aged really well, so it comes as no surprise that CBS are looking to make a TV show of it! There's not much to fault the story, but does feel like there's a bigger story going that we don't get to see because of the limited point of views of Newton and a scientist, Bryce that we're given. 7 out of 12/ Three Star read. Robert Hawkins, reviewing for Variety, praised Roeg's direction and felt the film was "stunning stuff throughout, and Bowie's choice as the ethereal visitor is inspired...Candy Clark, as his naive but loving mate, confirms the winning ways that won her an Oscar nomination in American Graffiti. Her intimate scenes with Bowie, especially the introductory ones, are among pic's highlights." [30] Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times described Bowie as "perfect casting" but thought the film was "a muddle," and suspected it was because he reviewed a version trimmed by 20 minutes for its U.S. run: "That would do a lot to explain why the movie proceeds from the provocatively cryptic to the merely incomprehensible." [31] In a retrospective review, Kim Newman of Empire gave the movie five stars out of five, describing the film as "consistently disorientating and beguilingly beautiful." [32] The way the man said it made his breath choke in his throat. Could there be something wrong? The color of the gold? Something about the diamond? He tried to smile again. "My wife gave it to me. Several years ago."The biggest difference between the series and the film is approach. The series is straightforward storytelling, while Roeg’s film is a work of expressionism, and peripherally myopic. The Man Who Fell to Earth is unlike any other science fiction movie. Roeg experimented with narrative in most of his films. Time is fluid and unpredictable. It moves disjointedly. Director Roeg gets as distracted by human dalliances as alien Newton. The movie is filled with digressions, gaps of logic and continuity, and extreme tone changes. Petski, Denise (April 14, 2021). "Rob Delaney Joins 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' Showtime Series". There were other differences, too: his fingernails, for example, were artificial, for he had none by nature. There were only four toes on each of his feet; he had no vermiform appendix and no wisdom teeth. It would have been impossible for him to develop hiccups, for his diaphragm, together with the rest of his breathing apparatus, was extremely sturdy, very highly developed. His chest expansion would have been about five inches. He weighed very little, about ninety pounds.

David: Overall a very enjoyable novel by Mr. Tevis and I’ll read more from him but maybe take a break, he can get mired in depressive narration. i have never seen the film. i can see why bowie was chosen to portray newton. i read that there's more sex in the film and it veers slightly away from the book in that regard. i can't imagine the film would be able to replicate the immersion in the disoriented and sad psyche of newton as he starts to realize he's not equipped to deal with being on earth; of being with him as he starts to crumble. a b Metcalf, Mitch (May 3, 2022). When Bowie’s Thomas Jerome Newton lands the audience doesn’t know how alien he is. As he moves through our planet, expectation forces our mind to alienate him. He otherwise blends into humanity, speaking the language in the Queen’s English, and reluctantly selling a gold wedding ring at an antique store for slightly less than what it is worth. Only when it is revealed he has a string of rings does the audience understand it is just a way to trade with the natives. The eponymous Man Who Fell to Earth is one Thomas Jerome Newton, a rather commonplace name, not alienesque like Xarx or something along that line. Of course, his real name is very unlikely to be Thomas Jerome Newton; he is from a planet he calls “Anthea*”, but if he has an Anthean name it is never mentioned. He has come to Earth on a solo super-secret mission, so secret that he has to destroy the single-seat spaceship he came in on. Using his knowledge of hyper-advanced science he soon builds a business empire selling amazing new products like – uh – a high-speed film that develops itself, a new kind of TV, stereo systems, and various gadgets. Things were going according to plan until the pesky, primitive humans become his friends. Thrilling adventure Disillusionment, loss of identity and heartbreak ensue.
