Kudos, Madam Tudor, for another winner. I quite enjoyed this piece and hope others will find as many chills as I did throughout. On Feb. 28, 1944, they were betrayed and Corrie and several relatives were arrested. The four Jews and two underground workers in the house at the time of the arrest were not located by the Nazis and were extricated by the underground 47 hours after they fled to the tiny hiding place (located in Corrie's room).

In May 1940, the German Blitzkrieg ran though the Netherlands and the other Low Countries. Within months, the “Nazification” of the Dutch people began and the quiet life of the ten Boom family was changed forever. The man's beard has been burned off by some thugs, a grim reminder of what was happening just to the east of the Netherlands. On May 10, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands, making the country’s worst fears of war and occupation a reality. It was still a stunning turn of events—not least for the pious ten Boom family. Disturbing changes began to present themselves. German uniforms and insignia became a common feature of ordinary life on the streets of Haarlem, while racist and antisemitic propaganda began to be published in once-respectable newspapers, now under the control of the Reich Ministry of Propaganda. If I’m being completely candid, had I known there was a supernatural aspect to the storyline, I never would have given this book a chance. I choose to while the days away in my literary comfort zone, where suspension of disbelief is a nonstarter. Well, let me eat those words right now— happily. This book bodes well for taking chances and purposefully stepping away from my status-quo every once in a while. Just look what can happen.

She risked everything for the sake of others

She left school at sixteen and has had a variety of jobs over the years, including trainee reporter, radio scriptwriter, shop assistant, ad agency copywriter and voiceover. While writing the Chalk Man she ran a dog-walking business, walking over twenty dogs a week as well as looking after her little girl.

I tried to figure it out but the further I got into the story , more perplexed I become. Soon afterwards, Mama has a stroke. Now she’s confined permanently to her bed, and can’t speak or write. Still, she manages to correspond with family and friends by having Corrie write letters to them. Meanwhile, Nollie becomes engaged to Flip, another student at the teaching school she currently attends. On their wedding day, Corrie realizes that she will probably never get married or leave home. She recalls her previous hopes of a life with Karel, but finds that she’s able to think of him “without the slightest trace of hurt.” She knows that Jesus has helped her to forgive Karel and pray for him sincerely. Several weeks after the wedding, Mama dies.The result of my first foray into C.J. Tudor’s world, a story teetering on the precipice of being something truly great. One little nudge—or in this case, more in regards to the why—would have sent this novel toppling end-over-end into favorite territory. But The Hiding Place absorbs the darkness surrounding it. It is on a far different plane than The Chalk Man. There was a true camaraderie of friends uplifting one another in her previous novel. This one dabbles in the dark underbelly of treacherous individuals engaging in treacherous acts. There's almost a Stephen King flavor added to this electrified punch. Quirky dialogue, topped with humor, always finds its way into Tudor's writing. She's a master. 'Nuff said. The first chapters of the memoir trace the author Corrie’s youth from age six to twenty-one with stories of her father’s wisdom; her love of Karel, who ends up marrying another woman; the deaths of two aunts; Willem’s and Nollie’s marriages; and the death of their beloved Mama. The ten Boom family gets a radio, which allows them to enjoy music and hear of the grim events unfolding around them. At this time, they discover that Nollie’s son Peter is a musical prodigy. Father hires a German whom he later fires for being an anti-Semite and for his disrespectful behavior. I thought this book was more darker and more supernatural than The Chalk Man. I loved this one a little bit more. In the beginning, I did not know what was going on and so many times I read the phrase, "It is happening again" which kept me intrigued. I just had so many questions and was happy that they were all answered in the end. I loved the twists, and I found it to be a fast paced book and hard to put down. I can't wait for my next C.J. Tudor book.

The film was directed by James F. Collier. Jeanette Clift George received a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer - Female. [1] The film was given limited release in its day and featured the last appearance from Arthur O'Connell. Eventually, both Nollie and Willem marry. And after the deaths of Corrie's mother and aunts, Casper, Corrie and Betsie, settle down into a pleasant domestic life. Later, in 1940, the Nazis invade the Netherlands.One of my favorite things about The Chalk Man was the writing. And it’s equally good here, in The Hiding Place. It’s not often I find myself highlighting phrases in a mystery. But that’s exactly what I’ve done with both of Tudor’s books.
