Pure white is an extreme color value for painting miniatures, which makes it difficult for most miniature painters to pull off well. White acrylic paints are often clumpy, don’t provide good coverage, and tend to require many coats to form an even, smooth surface. But, if done well, you can achieve some pretty neat effects, particularly for Tau minis. The innocence of the Tau has been shattered, and all their technological know-how is brought to bear on surviving. Just surviving. Sure, the Greater Good is their guiding principle, but to spread their evangelion the Tau must fight to survive and dominate. Rip n’ tear, impale and implode. The Strategic Assets are also neat, and my favorite is probably Tidewall Barricade, if only because it encourages building custom barricades for your team. These improved barricades give you a 4+ invulnerable save and actually give you an interesting use for your Tidewall fortifications and the old 3rd party T’au Aegis Defence Line some players still have sitting around. Pathfinders are some of the bravest warriors in the T’au Empire, pushing forward beyond positions of safety to take key ground for the Greater Good. With lots of operatives, Pathfinders can be great for this in Kill Team, giving you board control and objective dominance.

Of these, High-Intensity Markerlight (2 EP) is liable to see the most use, since the ability to drop 2 markerlights instead of 1 on a target when doing the action makes getting to that 3 ML sweet spot much, much easier. Likewise, Orbital Survey Uplink (3 EP) gives its operative a 2AP action to put a Markerlight on any enemy operative without terrain above them and every enemy operative within ▲ of them. You won’t need to do this often, but when you do it can be absolutely devastating. Pathfinder Teams are also deployed in the role of aggressive patrol groups, maintaining dominance over a wide area around an otherwise stationary Hunter Cadre and detecting any enemy forces that attempt to approach. Tau concept art My favorite red paints for base coating models is P3 Sanguine base and Reaper Master Series Carnage red. Both provide great coverage, mix well, and have a smooth finish. Games Workshop Citadel Mephiston Red is another favorite, but will need some thinning for an even coat without leaving brush streaks.

I would approach painting yellow in the same way I would with orange. Start painting yellow with a bright basecoat, such as white, and glaze with a yellow ink or wash. This starts your base tones that get you to a place where you can smooth things out and add more details. This is another great upgrade to the standard Shas’la operative, as it comes equipped with three types of grenades for free. It also has the Nanocrystalline Headgear ability which prevents any modifiers to its Action Point Limit (so it can’t really be stunned) and its Weapon and Ballistic Skill. My tip for painting with white paint include using a spray application either with an airbrush or aerosol spray can, or using a bit of non-white paint mixed into your white color to tint your main white undertone. A tint of brown, blue, or whatever you prefer can add “tooth” to your white paint. It will also allow you to highlight with pure white. Chipping and OSL combined looks amazing….A typical T'au Pathfinder squad will number from four to ten Shas'la members, usually led by a Shas'ui veteran and bonded together by the ritual of Ta'lissera. A typical T'au Pathfinder is equipped with a Pulse Carbine for use as his primary weapon, along with an attached underslung Photon Grenade Launcher and Marker Light.
