A 10-year-old girl named Chihiro is driving to a new home with her family, when they accidentally take a wrong turn. The road leads to a dark tunnel that her father thinks must be the entrance to an abandoned theme park. Entering the tunnel for the adventure, they find an enchanting village on the other side, where the smell of food leads them to a lavish buffet. While her parents begin gorging themselves, Chihiro explores the village and sees strange spirit creatures as well as a boy named Haku, who warns her of danger. Chihiro tries to leave, but finds that her parents have transformed into pigs. Now she must work in the village’s bathhouse, as a servant of the witch Yubaba, in the hope of finding a way to rescue her parents from their magic spell.

Carrying over the same audio options found on the prior GKIDS release and Disney BD, the Disney-produced English dub sounds as good as ever in 5.1 DTS-HD MA. It’s a stout surround mix with resounding clarity and energy. Moments such as Haku’s battle take center stage in the mix, delivering effective immersion and an expansive soundstage. Optional English SDH, French and a second set of English subtitles directly translating the Japanese dialogue are included. They play in a white font. A French dub is available in 5.1 Dolby Digital. Filled with astonishing beauty, the Oscar winner’s animation doesn’t quite pop compared to Studio Ghibli’s best-looking films in terms of HD goodness. The palette is ever so slightly duller, though it still has incredible moments of breathtaking scope for theatrical animation. Spirited Away: Soon to be Stage Play and Film? This is not the NA release poster, by the way. That will come later. Chihiro, a headstrong 10-year-old girl, is unhappy that her family are moving house and that she will have to make new friends. As they make their way to the new home, Chihiro's father takes a detour to explore a mysterious tunnel in the woods. On the other side is what seems to be a deserted theme park but is in fact a ghostly town. Unwittingly, they have strayed into the Land of the Spirits, a world of dreamlike scenery inhabited by ancient gods and magical beings, ruled over by the sorceress, Yubaba. With her parents held captive and Yubaba set on enslaving them forever, Chihiro must use all her energy to survive in this strange new place. With the help of Haku, a brave young spirit, she is forced to overcome her fears and join an epic battle for her family's freedom. A film that never tires and is always as comforting and magical as it was the first time Sure, you can watch a recorded version online, but the full charm of stage productions can really only be conveyed by watching the actors perform live. So it’s great news that the Spirited Away stage play is returning to Japanese theaters, with live shows scheduled in both 2023 and 2024, with the first coming this summer. Not to imply that all movies need to be the same, but comparing these two films is also a reminder how important it is to have main character who don't mostly watch other people do things. Sure, Chihiro gets help from many people along the way, but she feels so much more engaged than the poor Jupiter Jones.So when are we going to get to see Spirited Away: Live on Stage? Unfortunately, this is where GKIDS gets a bit vague. According to them, the release window for this film adaptation of the stage play adaptation of the Studio Ghibli anime film is sometime in Spring 2023. Whether they mean March, April, or May 2023 is unknown at this time. Fortunately, the release window means that we won’t have that long to wait even at the latest estimates, at the very least. As with other GKids Ghibli discs, the menus are simple – there are no promos, no extended BD Java load times. You get a static film-themed menu that allows you to get right to the content. The GKids’ Blu-ray includes about two hours worth of extras, some in HD and some in SD. Most of it is in the original Japanese with English subtitles (though there is also a bit of English material carried over from the Disney Blu-ray). You go out and top it with a masterpiece like Spirited Away, a gigantic critical and commercial success that shattered the box office record set by Princess Mononoke. I don't have the original DVD handy, but it appears as though Disney has ported over many (possibly all) of the Bonus Features from the original 2003 DVD.
