About this deal

A brilliantly written story with an intense atmosphere throughout, great fight scenes and an unbreakable bond of brotherhood that is intoxicating. I have to admit that this is the first book I read in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed it as Cato, Macro, Petronilla and the characters are fleshed out and relatable even if they’re act and think like you expect someone did 2 thousand years ago. Well what can I say.. I have been a fan of Simon Scarrows Eagle of the Empire series since 2017 when I discovered the books in my local library.

The series, in its entirety, documents Macro and Cato's attempts to live a soldier's simple life, however, their effectiveness as soldiers and Cato's former connections to the Imperial Court make this difficult. Through association with Cato, Macro also finds himself the object of the upper classes' intrigue and struggles for supremacy. The series also features Vespasian and Vitellius as supporting characters, during the formative years of their careers, and foreshadowing their future rivalry for the Imperial throne. Other than the Eagle Series, Simon has also written a few other notable novel series’ including the Revolution series, which is based on Napoleon and Wellington. Apart from the novel series’, Simon has also penned down a couple of standalone novels. This eventful Roman adventure is already the 19th instalment of the wonderful "Eagles of the Empire" series, from the formidable author, Simon Scarrow. Please get rid of her as Cato deserves a nice lady to settle down with and this relationship just does not work. This is the twenty-first book in the series and honestly, it’s the one I’ve been waiting for. The story of the rebellion of Boudica is well known to those of us growing up in the UK and I was so excited that this series was finally going to cover these events. The way Simon Scarrow has fleshed out the characters and brought them to life is incredible. I’ve always appreciated how the morality of the Roman invasion has been discussed over this series and how Macro and Cato genuinely see Rome as a guiding light of civilisation. Their insistence that the conquered isles will benefit and should be grateful eerily echoes the arguments of the much later British Empire.Samen met zijn tweede man Cato staat Marco voor de steeds moeilijkere taak de Brittanniërs zo snel mogelijk te verslaan. Het echte gevaar komt echter uit een andere, onverwachte hoek. I found the descriptions of life in Britain in the I century very interesting and they made me wish I know more about the lifestyle. Eagles of the Empire is a series of historical military fiction novels written by Simon Scarrow. The series began in July 2000 with the publication of Under the Eagle, and as of March 2022 there have been 21 novels released in the series, with the 22nd novel due in November 2023. [1] The first book starts in 42AD. The books cover the experiences of the two soldiers, initially as an experiencedcenturionand newoption, in battles in Germania and the invasion of Britain byClaudiusas part of theLegio II Augusta. The 6th bookThe Eagle’s Prophecyhas them serving as part of the Imperial Navy east of Italy. The 7th and 8th put them in Rome’s eastern provinces as agents of the emperor’s secretaryTiberius Claudius Narcissus.

The first half of the book follows this and the eventual start of the rebellion by Boudicca and Macro as senior centurion at Colchester has to deal with the fallout. The Eagle's Prophecy Audiobook | Simon Scarrow | Audible.co.uk". Audible . Retrieved 4 January 2020. AD 59. BRITANNIA. TENSION IS SIMMERING. DANGER LIES ROUND EVERY CORNER FOR ROME'S BRAVE SOLDIERS ...One of the protagonists Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived as the new young recruit in the Second Legion, which is considered as the toughest Roman Army. Initially, he finds it difficult to adjust to the rigorous military life and he also has to face the disgust from his colleagues as he gets appointed at a higher rank because of his connection with the Imperial Palace. Compare such an invigorating tome with a pair of books where there is precious little depth to any of the characters beyond occasional almost throwaway attempts at adding meat to the character's bones, and you'll hopefully see where I'm disappointed. The tale starts off with Cato and Macro escorting Queen Boudica of the Iceni towards Londinium to renew her pledge to Rome and its Governor Suetonius, after the death of her husband King Prasutagus of the Iceni, when during that voyage she's robbed of her tribute to Rome by some Roman bandits. Despite Death to the Emperor being the first book I’ve read in the series, I never felt at a loss. The author provides sufficient detail about previous events to help make sense of things but not too much that you feel you’ve learned everything there is to know. Although this is my first introduction to Centurion Macro and Prefect Cato, I loved their partnership borne of mutual respect and a soldierly comradeship forged in the heat of battle. For much of the book, though, they find themselves apart, each wishing they had the other beside them for support and advice, and because of their complementary skills.

Entry #20 in Simon Scarrow's Macro and Cato series, which means there's been approximately one entry per year. The series has also lost the 'Eagle' that was always included somewhere in the earlier titles ( Under the Eagle, The Eagle's Conquest, The Eagle and the Wolves etc), with that word last used in the title in entry # 7 ( The Eagle in the Sand). Vespasian is caught up in the intrigues of his wife, Flavia, who he knows is involved with a revolutionary group called The Liberators. Though she denies it and he must choose whether or not to believe her.Overall, I enjoyed this novel and am looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.
