About this deal

With writing like that, I'm hardly going to be thinking of magic, fantasy, kings, kingdoms and swords. No, I'm going to be thinking of high school, malls and Gossip Girl. The writing should reflect the setting of the book. Which was voided when you died, Avry." He sat next to me and pulled me in close, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. It's not enough to just be told someone is a genius, I need a character to display it in some form or another… I need to be shown it through characters actions, decisions and choices. And Ryne didn't… which just makes the driving force behind the first book (Avry giving up her life to save Ryne so he could save everyone else) a joke.

Often called the Grande Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy by biographers such as J. M. Cornwell and organizations such as Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Publishers Weekly, and Time, Andre Norton wrote novels for over 70 years. She had a profound influence on the entire genre, having over 300 published titles read by at least four generations of science fiction and fantasy readers and writers. On February 20, 2005, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, which had earlier honored her with its Grand Master Award in 1983, announced the creation of the Andre Norton Award, to be given each year for an outstanding work of fantasy or science fiction for the young adult literature market, beginning in 2006. Later in the poem, more ominously, Medea scatters herbs into the wind, and their scent lures her own brother into an ambush. Medea has run off with Jason by this point, and he kills her brother to prevent her from being forced to return home.

These days, however, smelling like a witch has its attractions. Misogynistic stereotypes of seductive enchantresses and evil crones have been reclaimed as feminist symbols, and the modern proliferation of perfume blends named for witches, spells and potions suggests that many people find their associations empowering.

OK, so by far the worst thing about this book has to be the writing itself. I don't even know how to describe it - it is just appallingly bad . It is just so ineloquent, the vocabulary choices are poor, and the whole thing just needs a load more editing. It honestly feels like a fist draft, because there are awkward sentences, bad structure and it is just so poorly executed. Snyder also uses jarringly modern phrases in such a medieval world. The constant use of "too bad" at the beginning of a sentence began to make my eye twitch towards the second half of the book. And using titles like "mom" or "poppa bear" in a fantasy world just - argh. It just throws the whole thing off. And the speech was so cringe worthy, and the reveals/cliffhangers at the ends of chapters just felt so clumsy and awkward. And even when I'm not twitching with annoyance at every sentence, the writing itself is very basic and simplistic, and I'm not sure why this is at all marketed as an adult fantasy. It has none of the maturity or complexity of an adult book.

Published in Moscow, by Eksmo and St. Petersburg, by Valerie SPD, 5-699-02421-2 and 5-814-20148-7, HC, 432pg ~ translation by N. Vasilieva ~ cover by Scott Grimando (original art entitled Dark Seed Dark Stone) ~ Russian title Аромат магии[Scent of Magic]As a parent I was used to making up short and funny stories for my daughter, Rachel. When she was about ten, however, she wanted a story about a really, really nasty witch. This time I put pen to paper and what started off as a tiny scrap of an idea got bigger and bigger and BIGGER. It became The Doomspell. First of all, I really liked how Snyder found a way to continue the concepts from the first book. The gang has to find a way to stop Tohon before he brings war to the 15 Realms. In the meantime, they have to warn everyone about the unusual army and figure out the secrets of the Peace and Death Lilies, as well as any possible connection tying them together. Anyone who enjoyed The Doomspell will want to follow it up with The Scent of Magic, in which the battle between the Witches and Earth’s children moves onto our planet.' The Times And now Avry the healer and heroin of this series. She's an act first, think later kinda girl, she puts the needs of others before her own and she doesn't react well to authority. Does that remind you of someone? LOL! Avry has a lot of Yelena, but she's softer and more innocent. More like Opal. I'm sure Ryne's keeping them busy with his genius military tactics that will stop Tohon." Which was the reason I'd given up my life for him.

Like costumes, perfumes offer a way to try on a persona for a little while. Maybe you want to feel like a powerful goddess, someone with a library full of magical tomes, or a seductive monster. But while costumes are obvious to other people, only the wearer knows what a perfume “means” – and perhaps that’s half the fun of smelling like Hecate. Young Willadene of the Wanderer's Inn in Kronengred manages to free herself from the so-called care of her Aunt Jacoba -- actually, it was more like Jacoba took her in to have an unpaid servant. Anyway, Willadene manages to win an apprenticeship to the local Herb Mistress. Under to the tutoring of Halwice, she discovers one of the reasons she had been almost unable to bear the evil scents of the innkeeper and one of her favored patrons -- it truly WAS an evil stench. The Herb Mistress, Halwice, teaches Willadene several small magics; in return, Willadene saves Halwice from an entrapment spell. Later, she helps Halwice free one of the duke's intelligence agents from a similar fate. When the Duke's daughter disappears, it's Halwice the Duke turns to and Willadene whose skills at scenting magic that helps recover the duke's daughter. ~ SLNo one knows I'm alive," I said again. "No one is looking for me. No more bounty hunters, no mercenaries or Tohon's dead." And best of all, no Tohon. The man who'd threatened to claim me, and I knew, if push came to shove, he could with one touch. I hugged my arms close to my body.
