Flashforge Flashforge’s rainbow PLA filament includes bright, almost neon colors (Source: Flashforge) Amolen’s filaments have a great tolerance of just 0.03 mm. According to the manufacturer, the raw plastic used to create the filament is high quality, eco-friendly, and sourced from the US. Amolen also points out that the filament doesn’t bubble, jam, or warp when printed.

While the printability of the luminous PLA filament is great, it is more abrasive than most PLAs, and so a printer equipped with a steel or ruby nozzle is recommended, though the best results and minimum chance of clogging will be from a hardened steel nozzle. These colors also won’t be as widely spread if the object isn’t large enough. For smaller projects, opt for a filament such as the Shiny Silk Rainbow PLA Filament by MIKA3D, where the color change happens between 3 – 10 meters. For larger projects, using a filament such as the AMOLEN PLA 3D Printer Filament where the color changes every 15 meters.

A sort of odd one out on our list here is the Zi-Rui color-changing filament. If you’re familiar with clear filaments, then you’ll know that their transparency is dependent on a few factors, one of which is the printing temperature.

True to the manufacturers’ representation, their prints had excellent colors and behaved like any other quality PLA. This was so good for them that they planned on sourcing more filament from 3DF in the future. Rainbow filaments are the ideal way to create a multicolored 3D project without having to layer one color on top of each other using different colors and a complex process.
